False start...again.

What does this team do during the week?

[edit] I want to apologize to the Browns O-line for what turns out to be A PURPOSEFUL FALSE START DIRECTED BY FREDDIE KITCHENS IN ORDER TO PRESERVE A TIMEOUT DESPITE MAKING IT 4TH AND 16 AND STILL GOING FOR A FIRST DOWN ON THE NEXT PLAY.

I'm fine with firing Freddie for this stupidity alone.

Here goes y'all - i'll just go by offense and defense:

OFFENSE

  • Nick Chubb is still the f****** man. The fumbles happened, he'll move on, as should we.
  • Baker's lack of awareness is starting to get really frustrating. Particularly:
    • It was the 2nd or 3rd play of the game where we had a nice gain that was called back due to an illegal man downfield. This play was an RPO (Run-pass option) and first off, I think Baker made the wrong read. We had 6 on 6 in the box and Baker's read was the weak side linebacker, who didn't overly commit on the run. Whenever you have numbers and a WLB in pass coverage, you give. Moreover, the fact that Baker had to wait for Landry to clear that LB is what caused the throw to come a half second later than it otherwise should have, and led to our OL downfield blocking - doing 100% the right thing. Baker needs better situational awareness there.
    • The Pats didn't disguise all that much. When they were Cover 0, they were in our faces about it. 5-6x throughout the game Baker could have taken off for 7-8 easy yards as all defenders had their backs turned guarding their man. I know you all get frustrated when he scrambles, but when you see Cover 0 with no spy, running is usually the right thing to do.
  • We were out coached, and here's a couple nuanced points:
    • Chubb's first fumble was due to a brilliant piece of technique by Kyle van Noy. When left unblocked, defensive ends are taught to squeeze the end and scan laterally down the LOS, as it usually means they're either the read man or about to get blown up by a pulling OL. In this case, KVN saw the pull, and dove at the inside knee of Bitonio (I think), which clogged the hole and sent Bitonio off of his feet - leading to the fumble.
    • When we run screens, our alignment makes it predictable. At least 2-3x I saw all of our receivers to the playside lined up on the line of scrimmage. In essence, this makes every receiver inside of the end man ineligible which: a) tells the defenders that the inside receivers/TE aren't running a route or b) leads to a penalty. This is the type of crap good high school coaches pick up on, much less Bellichick.
  • We need Odell to get more targets. He's really not being doubled as much as people claim, and even when he is, we can still throw him open. As someone that played TE throughout my career, I can sincerely say that a ball is exponentially harder to catch later in a game if you haven't gotten any targets and acclimation throughout the game. Obviously, he needs to bring in that back shoulder throw, but we also need to prime the motor a bit.

DEFENSE

  • Steve Wilks is the man. Our defense flies to the ball and everyone gives effort. We just need a little better technique out of Greedy and we'll be ready to roll.
  • I'd like to see him incorporate Myles and Olivier into a few more stunts when their lined up in the boundary. Both of them can escape blocks on their own, but they become damn near unguardable when communication between OL leads to any confusion whatsoever.
  • Joe Schobert plays well beyond his means. Guy will be an asset if we start ripping off wins here and look for the playoffs.

All in all, everyone needs to calm down. We're still okay. If we lose to Denver, however, get the life jackets.

2-5 is still 2-5 and not many of the issues that have been highlighted appear to be getting fixed.  Blown out by a .500 Titans team and blown out by a surprising 9ers team.

That said, the schedule gets markedly easier - Buffalo is the only remaining team currently above .500 before the Week 16 rematch with Baltimore.  Cincy twice and Miami should = 3 automatic wins.  Split the other remaining 6 and it's 8-8.  Do slightly better and it becomes 9-7.

9-7 this year vs 7-8-1 last year with allllllll of the extra firepower would be a disappointment, at least to me. Though 9-7 is probably realistic, I'm hoping they win every game for the rest of the season and that the penalties and turnovers will be finally be addressed. They're just playing sub-par with all of the talent this team has, and much of it points to coaching. I'm not saying get rid of Kitchens, but the penalties and turnovers- that's just undisciplined play and points to the coach.

I agree - and there are no excuses for some of the undisciplined play we're seeing.

Nonetheless, Browns fans love to enter this self-perpetuating cycle of starting over, and have yet to realize its effects

I think the two fumbles by Chubb were a fluke- the first one especially, as I doubt most running backs are really watching specifically for their linemen to get upturned right ahead of them and kick the ball out of their hands.  That was one in a million.  The second one was is the kind of thing that happens as the result of some really good ball hawking by the Pat's defense.  Chubb is too good and works too hard at his craft not to learn from it.

I hope.

Well, to be fair, the Cavs were 2-2 at that point.  Browns fans were similarly elated (myself included) after we beat the Ravens to go to 2-2.

At least someone is being held accountable. He stinks and he publicly threatened people when criticized for it.

Do we have a Defensive Coordinator?

I think almost all of the coaching staff is defensive at this point, not just the coordinators.

I was fully expecting to give the browns a pass after a win in Denver. I predicted they would go 4-4 through 8 with that schedule they had...and then rock and roll. A win in Denver would’ve made them 3-5 and they let one against rams and one against Seahawks slip away. Ok, young team playing super bowl tested franchises down to the wire. We will give them a pass.  Funny how 5 points and several inches on bakers sneak and The entire season is a complete disaster. There is no excuse to lose that game with that much on the line. You win that game and come home to take care of buffalo and Pittsburgh and you are where you need to be. Bad bad bad.  Unfortunately the black cloud and losing culture is now all over these young guys and Dorsey who were suppose to change things. Once you are in, there is no gettin out

What a disappointment. They should have won that game, and instead...ugh...and the Jermaine Whitehead thing just make it uglier.  I think I am learning what it is to be a Browns fan. sigh. On to next week!

I think the Browns need to take some advice from the late great Tony Gwynn.

Remember these two things: play hard and have fun.

Anyone else notice since game 1 the Cleveland Browns have looked absolutely miserable. Why is that?

Is it true the love affair is over?  Is last seasons "golden boy", this seasons "polished turd"!

A win is a win is a win is a win!

Maybe this is the turnaround point?

*Cleveland wins, OSU wins, Bama loses. All is good.

I agree a "W" is a "W".  Lets hope the Cavs do their job and get a "W" tonight against the sknicks!  Or I may go to jail!

BAZINGA !!!!

way to go browns

159ft is a long-@#% kick (through 18ft wide uprights). Couple that with the pressure of a game on the line and that was a very missable attempt.

There's been quite a bit of game mismanagement this season. Plus the offense has been really out of sync, save for the Ravens game.

But nice to see the W today, even though the Browns really should have won by 14.

Penalties and turnovers were down, almost completely. So that’s good. Something still didn’t feel right, but they can make the first 8 games forgotten with a win Thursday and then Miami coming to town.  The taunting penalty in Q1 almost ended up being a huge issue. Little stuff like that, has to be eliminated completely

Heh.  I turned the game off after the fumble-recovery TD for Buffalo that was waved off as a forward pass after I'd already tuned out.  This thread was the first inkling I had that we actually won the game.  I was very confused until I went back and watched a YouTube highlight reel.
