Seventh Son, an Italian Village staple known for its welcoming taproom and free-roaming and furry assistant manager, will celebrate five years today with the opening of their brand new rooftop patio. Owners Jen Burton, Travis Spencer and Collin Castore first opened Seventh Son as a bar in December, 2012. They served other local brews, but none of their own yet. Jackie O’s, Rockmill, Zauber, Hoof Hearted — all were kept on tap. April 20, 2013 is when SS’s first flagship brews were introduced to Columbus: the American Strong Ale, the Stone Fort Oat Brown Ale, The Scientist IPA and the Humulous Nimbus Strong Pale Ale. The 4,000 square foot first floor taproom was packed, with some guests showing up as early as 8 a.m. to get inside. Craft & Vinyl, Grandview’s new vinyl shop, recording studio and bar, will open its doors in mid-August. It’s assumed the residence of the former Alternative Resale shop at 1806 W. Fifth Ave., but it’d be unrecognizable to any former customers. The space was “a total gut job,” says owner Troy Stacy. Rebuilt from the ground up, the old shop gained new electrical work and plumbing, and it’s got about four more feet of headspace. It’s also traded in its casual and business women and menswear for cases of vinyl, each offering a few cup holders for buzzed record browsers. New vinyl is showcased on the wall, along with show posters designed by Mike Martin of local design studio Engine House 13. The District PourHouse, featuring a made-to-order hot dog stand as well as two gaming lounges and an arcade, will replace World of Beer at 1568 N. High St. on Thursday, August 16. The District PourHouse Tuesday announced it is taking over for World of Beer on Aug. 16. House Beer at 843 N. High St. in the Dakota Building will become Bourbon & Barley Saloon on Oct. 1 with a grand opening party set for Oct. 6. Tom Kincaid acquired the watering hole in 2016 and kept its original name, but said the time is right for change. What has been known as Flint Carry Out and Top of Flint for the past several decades will now be known as The Market at Flint Station. The almost 130-year old building is located at 225 Park Rd. Sisters-in-law LeighAnn Guagenti and Gracie Guagenti purchased the old building earlier this year. Prior to their ownership, the building had a long history in retail. Erected in the 1890s by the Crowner family, the original purpose was a community market, with the upper level being the residence for the family. Although not the original train station, its proximity to the tracks provided lots of traffic. The Crowners also owned a park across the street where travelers and customers would take their fresh market items for a picnic. Located at 714 S. High St., the new “sour and wild” brewery is sandwiched between the Tremont Lounge and the upcoming restaurant Ambrose & Eve. The space is currently awaiting some finishing touches and a finalized liquor license, but co-owner Collin Castore says they’ll be pouring beers before the week is out. As promised when the news first broke, Antiques on High will be serving up a nearly exclusive menu of wood aged sour and wild Belgian-style beers, with the exception of some Seventh Son favorites, including the Humulus Nimbus pale ale and Black Sheep stout. A selection of six cocktails (developed by mixologist Travis Owens) and six wines will also be on tap. Rise Brands opens its newest 16-Bit Bar+Arcade site Tuesday at Bridge Park in Dublin. It’s the fourth for that brand overall, but it’s notable for other reasons, too. It’s the first new 16-Bit in Central Ohio since the original opened at 254 S. 4th St. in 2013. It’s also a first look at the new, more spacious, modern design for the brand, which combines classic arcade games (all set to free play), retro decor and 1980s-inspired drinks. Antiques on High, the new sour-focused brewery and bar from Seventh Son Brewing Co., expects to open this week at 716 S. High St. nearly two years since it was first announced. The long timeline was somewhat anticipated. The Columbus craft brewery, after all, also had undertaken a rather large expansion of its original brewery in Italian Village. Final permits were expected this week, which would allow the space to open to the public. The Parlor, started by local musicians and entertainers, will open this month at a former residence on High Street Downtown. There’s no passcode, special knock, or lever to pull for access. Those interested in a membership can apply for one online. The venue’s Facebook page has a sign up option for details, and those who submit their information will get access to an application. Sideswipe Brewing Co. has added 1,500 square feet to its Columbus operation at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr. where it will welcome Arcade Super Awesome. That arcade operation previously was in Olde Towne East, on the second floor of a building above Yellow Brick Pizza. Owner John Geiger will bring his brand and games to the Sideswipe space first with a small preview tied to the brewery’s Jan. 19 anniversary party and then, more fully, in February. Huli Huli will be the latest bar to enter the central Ohio tiki scene, opening in Powell at 26 W. Olentangy St. next weekend. Huli Huli General Manager Nate Howe says their goal is to recreate the cocktail menu, decor and energy from tiki’s debut, and they’ve consulted the ultimate tiki guidebook, Sippin’ Safari by “tiki anthropologist” Jeff Berry. For the book, Berry interviewed retired bartenders from the 40s and 50s and got them to divulge the secret ingredients and recipes for the classic cocktails invented by tiki founding fathers Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic. They’ll open up Duecento, Italian for “two-hundred,” on the corner of East Fourth Avenue and North Fourth Street this Saturday, Feb. 2. Losinske and Lawson took over the lease at 200 E. Fourth Ave. three years ago, hoping to transform an abandoned warehouse with no plumbing or electricity into a vibrant restaurant and cocktail lounge. With 3,000 square feet to work with, they carved out a space for a large bar, a DJ station, and a line of big booths along the west wall of the building, leaving an open floor between it all. In the back is a full kitchen, and behind the building a large, enclosed patio. The process came with no shortage of “bureaucratic snafus,” preventing them from installing skylights that would allow live plants to thrive. Losinske has instead filled the place with realistic fake plants, pulpy posters, chandeliers, mood lighting, and antique accents. Duecento, Italian for “two-hundred,” sits at 200 E. Fourth Ave. in a revamped warehouse. Described by co-owner Andrew Losinske as a cocktail lounge, Duecento’s light effects, dance music, DJ booth and dance floor turned on more of a night club vibe during the bar’s soft opening on Friday. She’ll join her husband Luke Pierce in opening Law Bird, a wine and cocktail-centric bar taking over Village Pet Supply at 740 S. High St. The Pierces have been scheming over Law Bird for several years, looking to fuse elements from the wine and cocktail bars they’ve visited in their travels to develop a unique concept of their own. The intimate space at the corner of Frankfort and High was the perfect destination for Law Bird, they say, with its high visibility, large windows, and placement in a neighborhood that is rapidly becoming a destination. The Quarry Co., which soft opened earlier in March, will have a grand opening this Friday, March 29. Owners Todd Meister, of Meisters’s Bar, and Mitch Allen, who is part of the Zeno’s team, acquired the space in mid-January. The two had been talking about joining up on a bar for several years, and saw the old Trabue Tavern spot as a prime location. Barrel & Taps is now open at 1380 W. 3rd Ave., offering up 1,950 square feet for cocktails and craft beers. “We wanted this to be a place that would feel like your friend’s house,” Erik Niceswanger said. “You can have a drink, maybe a small event.” Niceswanger co-owns the new bar with Carlos Domingo. The latest venue by Cameron Mitchell Restaurants (CMR) features craft cocktails, small plates and all-encompassing views of Columbus. It’ll open on Tuesday, April 30. Whistle & Keg, a pour-your-own concept based in Youngstown, will take up residence in the Moline Plow building at 343 N. Front St. this summer. “The spotlight on the Arena District keeps getting brighter, and we’re excited to be a part of it,” said Mike Thomas, who co-owns Whistle & Keg with his brother Joe. “Whistle & Keg is a true tasting room, where people have the freedom to pour wine and mead and beer and cider from 50 different self-serve taps. Sports fans, concert goers, happy hour drinkers alike are going to love this concept. You pay for what you pour — try an ounce or pour a pint.” The Whistle & Keg taproom will span 2,500 square feet, feature an expansive outdoor patio, and preserve the historical aspects of the more than 100-year-old Moline Plow building. Built in 1913, the building is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The bar is coming to 740 S. High St., making it the latest addition to a two-block strip in the Brewery District/German Village area that already includes The Daily Growler, Antiques on High, Ambrose & Eve, Smoked on High and Local Cantina. Owners Annie Williams-Pierce and Luke Pierce are known names around the Columbus imbibing scene. They’ve operated Four Thieves Thirst Parlour pop-up cocktail event business for years. Williams-Pierce is a former bartender at Curio and The Sycamore and has gained acclaim for her creations after winning the 2017 Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition. The 1,300 square foot building at 2864 N. High St., formerly occupied by Clintonville Outfitters, has potential operators lined up, though no names have been released. Property owner 2864 Clintonville LLC and developer United Development Services (UDS) appeared before the Clintonville Area Commission to seek a parking variance. In addition to reducing the number of parking spaces on the property from 79 to 7, UDS property manager Evan Fracasso says they intend to use inspiration from the original building, when it was Lindimore Motor Sales, as they develop it. The bar has yet to share specifics on where the new location will be or what concept visitors can expect inside. More details are expected to be released soon, according to an email from Zeno's owner Quinn Allen. The Harrison West bar will add an outdoor seating area, and a second bar will open inside of their basement event space. Named Dick’s Dive, the lower level bar pays homage to Richard “Dick” Allen, Zeno’s founder and prolific Columbus bar owner, who passed away last year. "I woke up one night and just said that's what I was gonna do, I was gonna start a bar there," he said. "My wife just said, 'Go back to sleep,' but the idea stuck with me." And so it has. Holderby closed on the former Chase branch at 45 E. Granville St. last Wednesday, although the purchase has not yet been registered on the county auditor's website. Holderby believes the 4,200-square-foot old bank has a good vibe for his new cocktail bar and event venue, District 13. It's a return to the restaurant industry for Holderby, who in a past life worked in bars but today owns J. Holderby Renovations Design & Construction Services, a remodeling contractor for high-end homes. When The Market opened last October and owners LeighAnn Guagenti and Gracie Guagenti held a grand opening celebration for the space, Rich Sharick had a look at the space for the first time. He had been wanting to see a place in Columbus where he can simply sit and listen to acoustic music, uninterrupted, on the weekends. We want it to feel like you’re at our house and you’re sharing a glass of wine with us.” What better way to drive that point home than to set up shop in a former home? Coast expects to open in late summer at 75 S. High St. in Dublin. The space is a historic home built in the 1880s that was a residence for more than 100 years. It has been a retail space for the past few decades, most recently as Ha’penny Bridge Imports of Ireland. Much of the marble flooring and showroom lighting is going away and making room for blacklights, arcade games and some pretty hefty indoor attractions. For the first time, Scene 75 is giving a peek behind the work in progress. Dayton-based entertainment company Scene 75 bought the former Macy’s at the Mall at Tuttle Crossing for $3 million. The company has put in $15 million to transform the two-floor, 225,000-square-foot space into a family entertainment center that will be one of the largest in the United States. Instead there’s “beers your dad would drink,” mismatched chairs, zero clocks and zero windows. It’s the kind of place where you could easily loose track of time, just as Owner Quinn Allen intended. The bar is a tribute to Allen’s late father. The patriarch’s decades of bar ownership are memorialized on the walls and behind the bar at Dick’s Dive, representing a collection of neon signs and booze relics found in Allen’s parents’ garage and basement. The bar is situated below Harrison West neighborhood mainstay Zeno’s at 384 W. Whistle & Keg, a self-serve taproom, will be open Friday for the drop of the puck. Brothers and co-owners Joe Thomas and Mike Thomas opened the first Whistle & Keg in Youngstown in 2017 and have one in Cleveland as well. Gorilla Cinema, the company behind the Overlook Lodge, Lonely Pine Steakhouse, Video Archive and Tokyo Kitty, last month partnered with Pan Am Brands to host the Pan Am Layover Lounge as a limited-time popup. It transformed Tokyo Kitty into an airline terminal from aviation's golden age and a layover lounge in an exotic locale served by Pan Am during its heyday. The experience was ticketed – and sold out within 72 hours. The goal was always to expand the experience if the pilot – pun intended – went well, and it did.
