High St. was ugly over the weekend just sound of Nationwide & High while crews painted the skywalk "Nationwide Blue" - doesn't look too bad, big improvement over rusted dark brown

Yeah, much better improvement for such a hideous skywalk.

That was really fast. It's going to be weird passing by here. Not the best design, but like I thought it looks very Arena District. I imagine Char Bar won't mind the extra foot traffic, not to mention how accessible North Market is from here.

DAI-Hilton-Gallerie-Bar-&-Bistro-2.jpg?v=1

The Hilton Columbus Downtown hotel next to the Greater Columbus Convention Center didn’t have to look far for its culinary leaders.

The under-construction destination Friday announced the hiring of two Columbus restaurant veterans to set the food and drink tables for its Gallerie Bar & Bistro and the hotel as a whole. Michael Mejia is director of food and beverage, and Bill Glover is executive chef.

Few more construction photos of the new Downtown Hilton Hotel and its context from Columbus Underground's Construction Roundup - July 2012.

View of the hotel's west side from Front Street.  This window wall looks toward Nationwide Arena and the Arena District.  The structure in the foreground is an addition to the existing Vine Street Parking Garage.  The addition to the parking garage will accommodate the increased demand from both the new Hilton Hotel and the new Nationwide Insurance Office Building adjacent to the garage.

More photos of the glass enclosed overhead walkway that will connect the Hilton Hotel with the Greater Columbus Convention Center on the west side of High Street.  It looks like it is getting very close to being installed.  Here's some more recent photos of the walkway from the MyUrbanhood twitter feed, the Dispatch, and the Columbus Underground thread 'Downtown Hilton Hotel - News & Updates':

I mean, if there has to be a skywalk...that's a damn nice one.

^ That last image from August 23 is actually a rendering, not a photo.  Spooky how realistic some renderings can be, no?

The "for real" skywalk got installed earlier today over High Street.  Here's some of the first pics of the installation from the Downtown Hilton Hotel - News & Updates thread at Columbus Underground.  More photos at the thread link.

The first two photos were taken from the Convention Center/North Market area and look south toward the rest of downtown.

The last two photos were taken from the High Street Bridge and look north toward the Convention Center/North Market area with the Short North just beyond.

Also, a really neat 2 minute time-lapse video of the skywalk's installation was posted at Columbus Underground.  It's a vimeo video, which I've never had good luck in embedding here.  So to view it - click the above CU link and scroll to the bottom of that page.

News about the opening of the Downtown Hilton Hotel from this article in last Sunday's Dispatch.  The article featured a series of rolling opening dates for the new hotel.

According to the hotel's director of sales and marketing in the article: "The projected opening is mid-October" and "The hotel's first group is booked for the week starting October 15."  But "declined to say when the guests are set to arrive, or the size or even the name of the group".

According to the article, the director did say that "the group will not fill the hotel and this was by design".  Adding that "it's natural in the hotel business to ramp up your occupancy when you're brand new".  Also according to the article, "At the moment, October 28 is the first night that guests not affiliated with a group can book a room at the new hotel".

On my way from Cincy to Cleveland Wednesday I took a detour and got off the highway, went up High Street, and got on I-670 to bypass all the I-71/70 interchange garbage that was backed up like crazy. I passed by this Hilton and was quite surprised at how much I liked it. It's fairly simple, but nicely done. The glass canopy over the sidewalk was interesting as was the skybridge. I'd like to see more of this style of architecture built in Ohio's cities.

Downtown Hilton planning nearly $500K restaurant and bar overhaul

hilton-downtown-columbus-new-bar-schematic-plan-10212015-2*750xx2234-1257-0-1.jpg

The Hilton Columbus Downtown is hardly three years old, but it’s already getting a nearly $500,000 renovation.

Guest complaints about noise from the hotel's drinking and dining areas, which has been drifting up through the large atrium, prompted Hilton to make plans to alter the layout of its Gallerie bar and make sound-dampening improvements to its adjacent Gallerie restaurant.
