Freedom Check: The new Capitol Visitor Center symbolizes the kind of nation we have become

By Linda Hales, MetropolisMag.com

Posted October 15, 2008

There is arguably no more potent image of democracy than the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol dome.  With the opening of the massive underground Capitol Visitor Center planned for December 2, the hallowed place takes on the burden of new symbolism: a nation hunkered down.  The $621 million, 580,000-square-foot complex, by RTKL Associates, is a marble bunker and then some.

The project grew out of a modest plan to manage tourists after a gunman killed two Capitol Police officers in 1998.  After September 11, 2001, the design morphed into a supersecure five-acre subterranean city, much of it off-limits to the public.

I don't undertstand why everyones is hating on this project.  It's not like they wanted to build a visitor center above ground in front of the Capitol because then it would ruin views of the capitol at street level. I think the visitor center looks fine and preserves views of the camp, while offering views of it from the center from underground.

After a multi-year process, the Capitol Dome restoration project is now officially complete.  This was the first comprehensive restoration of the Capitol Dome since the 1950's.  Scaffolding obscured the historic dome for the past few years.  Below is a photo of the Capitol Dome during the restoration project and a news report at the project's inception in 2014:

Finally! They have been talking about this forever! I hope it remains known as Dave Thomas Circle even after it's improved. It's DC history!

Quote from the article:

"Due to the challenges of the triangular site, the project will not have any parking or loading."   If you build it close to a metro station, just about any density (except height) goes.

Former Brookland Bowling Alley Set to Become 320-Unit Development

May 25, 2022
By UrbanTurf Staff

"There have been any number of recent residential conversions in the DC region, but the area has yet to see a bowling alley conversion. Until now.

UIP recently filed plans with DC's Historic Preservation Office for a 321-unit development at the site of the former Brookland bowling alley in DC's Brookland neighborhood. Brookland Lanes will be constructed around the historic building at 3726 10th Street NE."

"Brookland Lanes’ big idea is to accentuate the existing historic building by designing a handsome yet understated new building around it," the plans stated. "The proposed new building’s architectural language is defined by a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco design principles in reference to the existing building."

The new development, designed by ktgy, will have a pool and an outdoor amenity space on the roof of the existing historical building. UIP is also proposing a new public retail plaza at the corner of 10th Street NE and Michigan Avenue NE.

The duckpin bowling alley at 3726 10th Street NE was in operation from 1939 to about 1950 when a fire severely damaged the building. The property was most recently occupied by the Atlantic Electric Supply Co.

An ideal state for the future of suburbs in this country - an area of density surrounding frequent rapid transit stations that connect to downtown / job hubs. Even w the balance of a given suburb being single family homes, this type of development would be tremendous for both the community and the environment.

Talk of raising the height limit for buildings in Washington DC is bubbling up again.  Mayor Bowser has proposed raising the limit from 130 ft. to 160 ft.  It's part of her campaign to develop 20,000 units of housing for 'downtown' Washington.  So many people are WFH that the city seem dead according to her.

Not sure why the mayor wants to stop at 160 feet, but supposedly the extra two or three stories will make apartment buildings financially more feasible.

McMillan Sand Filtration Site

Address: North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue NW

Neighborhood: Bloomingdale

For years, the 2.1-million-square-foot project remained in development limbo, but demolition finally started in October 2021. Though a solid delivery date is still unknown, the plan for the site includes a grocery store, 467 apartments, 146 townhomes and 860,000 square feet of medical office space, plus a community center and an eight-acre park. The four regulator houses, 20 sand silos, sand bins and two underground filter beds are expected to be preserved on the site.

I sat in the Reagan National Airport waiting my flight a week ago and noticed 6 construction cranes in action across the river.  Not bad by Cleveland terms, but just a year ago numbers in the high teens were common.  Construction in DC has definitely chilled over the past year.
