Freedom Check: The new Capitol Visitor Center symbolizes the kind of nation we have become

By Linda Hales, MetropolisMag.com

There is arguably no more potent image of democracy than the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol dome.  With the opening of the massive underground Capitol Visitor Center planned for December 2, the hallowed place takes on the burden of new symbolism: a nation hunkered down.  The $621 million, 580,000-square-foot complex, by RTKL Associates, is a marble bunker and then some.

The project grew out of a modest plan to manage tourists after a gunman killed two Capitol Police officers in 1998.  After September 11, 2001, the design morphed into a supersecure five-acre subterranean city, much of it off-limits to the public.

I don't undertstand why everyones is hating on this project.  It's not like they wanted to build a visitor center above ground in front of the Capitol because then it would ruin views of the capitol at street level. I think the visitor center looks fine and preserves views of the camp, while offering views of it from the center from underground.

After a multi-year process, the Capitol Dome restoration project is now officially complete.  This was the first comprehensive restoration of the Capitol Dome since the 1950's.  Scaffolding obscured the historic dome for the past few years.  Below is a photo of the Capitol Dome during the restoration project and a news report at the project's inception in 2014:
