Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion

^ Can you elaborate on what those plans may be?

Seems like a good topic for a new thread.  I bet a lot of people on this forum have ideas that could help.

^ He's not even that good of an administrator. He did a good job with brining in the right people to take care of the city's fincances, but outside of that, he hasn't done a great job.

I obviously know the mayor doesn't have complete control over crime in the city. But I'd just at least be happy to see him communicate with the community about the problem and steps the administration has been taking to help rectify it. Communication is always key and Frank does a terrible job with that.

Spine may be more important.  Being blunt with key people instead of weasel wording.

All too often, some of the community leaders get bamboozled.  Not by the thugs themselves, they truly "don't give a f" unless they are forced to.  By their families, who insist that they are "good boys, just misunderstood".  That phrase has become a cliche that the intellectually challenged have picked up on, but it didn't get that way for no reason.

Why would we want to "call" the 1990's?  Wasn't that when crime hit its peak?

I think the peak was actually in the 1970s. In at least one year that decade, the number of murders in the city was over 300.

In the City of Cleveland, yes, the murder rate peaked in the 1970s.  But that declined soon after because of the population loss that followed.  For the Country, the per capita homicide and violent crime rate peaked in 1995 (pretty sure about that).  The Country's per capita murder rate rose from the 70s through the 90s before beginning to fall to its current levels.

Power was out on Friday night. I thought it was jsut the neighborhood, but looks like it took down 12,000 customers.

Apparently some guy stole a front loader, drove it across the RR tracks and took out the power lines.  Snapped the pole in half.

We saw the sparks on Friday, but being this neighborhood I figured some guy was shooting fireworks. :)

My brother's band played out there, I facebooked him wondering if their sound equipment was the culprit.

Not sure why they are calling this guy a "serial killer".  Technically that's true, but it doesn't sound he was anything like what that phrase has come to mean.

^pretty remarkable that can happen with hundreds of residents/hotel guest literally right above the action.  those places all should have security systems that would alarm with such destruction.  Hopefully some video nabs the guy.  I imagine it was some angry drunk

The person was caught and was mentally ill. He did not put up a fight.

We need to start gently easing such people towards social services, or at least away from downtown.  Trying to do it quickly before the convention will be harsher, and more to the point appear so.  Appearances are crucial as the left leaning media would love to see the GOP (and by extension Cleveland) look bad, and the right leaning media is sensationalistic.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A male is dead after a daylight shooting on Cleveland's West Side.

The victim was struck in the head about 1:30 p.m. where West 82nd Street meets Neville Avenue in the city's West Boulevard neighborhood, police spokeswoman Detective Jennifer Ciaccia said.

The victim was dead when police arrived, Ciaccia said.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the victim's identity after his family is notified.

Neighbors said they heard two men arguing before gunfire erupted.

Investigators at the scene marked more than a dozen pieces of evidence scattered across the intersection.

It is unclear if a suspect has been identified or if an arrest has been made.

More than 50 people, mostly Cleveland gang members, connected to Northeast Ohio car thefts, break-ins

By Jane Morice, cleveland.com

on November 05, 2015 at 3:03 PM, updated November 05, 2015 at 7:48 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday that more than 50 people are charged in a series of car thefts, robberies and break-ins across the region.

Many of those arrested Thursday morning were juveniles tied to several gangs on Cleveland's West Side, First Assistant County Prosecutor Duane Deskins said at a press conference. The number of defendants makes the case one of the largest ever brought by the county prosecutor's office.

"They operated from Avon Lake to Eastlake, and from the shores of Lake Erie to Strongsville," Deskins said.

Bicyclist shot in chest early Friday in Cleveland's Gordon Square

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/11/bicyclist_shot_in_chest_early.html#incart_river_home

Word from the police, via the Ohio City Crimewatch Facebook page is that the victim was fresh out of jail on drug charges. So yeah, likely more to this story than he was just innocently cycling down Detroit at 3:00 am and got shot.  I take all these reports of people being shot for basically no reason with a grain of salt.  Victims aren't going to tell police they were in the middle of a bad drug deal when they took a bullet.

Lots of break ins the past couple weeks on West Blvd., W102, etc  between Baltic and Clifton mostly in the morning.

Seems like guys are staking out houses and waiting for people to leave.

I walk as far east as West 110th on Clifton. I'll keep an eye out.

Electricity is out along lower Euclid Ave. May be related to this...

Something's on fire downtown - maybe next to @heinens? Don't think it's them the way people were exiting. #CLE https://t.co/iwBM64KMZR

An oil truck is on fire in front of @Heinens downtown. Avoid the intersection. https://t.co/37bgQtnF3r

I saw it from afar.  From what I saw, it looked like a pretty sizable vehicle fire in the bus lane right outside the E. 9th Healthline stop.

It was not a structure fire, thankfully.

@zachreed12 points out 109 homicides in Cleveland this year. 15 west of the River and 94 east of River.

@zachreed12 says in Ward 9, there have been 17 homicides in 2015, more than the entire Westside of the City of Cleveland.

Talked to some in that area and East Lakewood who have seen two suspicious guys in a beat up white van. So far nobody has gotten a license plate yet.
