Cleveland Mob Figure Danny Greene's Story Coming to the Big Screen

If you know anything about the rich history of the mob in Cleveland odds are that you know the story of  Danny Greene rather well. Movieset reveals in a press release announcing the film:

THE IRISHMAN chronicles the rise and fall of Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), the fiercely proud and vicious Irish-American gangster who muscled in on the Italian mob in 1970s Cleveland, Ohio. Thirty-six bombs shook the streets of Cleveland in 1976 as the legendary, almost mythical Celtic warrior Danny Greene launched a turf war that struck down countless dozens of gangsters. The hard fought death of Danny Greene started a chain reaction of mobsters turning against mobsters that led to the collapse of the Mafia not only in Cleveland, but also in Milwaukee, Kansas City, Los Angeles, and other cities across the United States. The Mafia, or La Cosa Nostra, never recovered.

The film is based on the book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia". Ray Stevenson will portray the lead as Danny Greene with Christopher Walken playing Shondor Birns. Val Kilmer will be featured in the film as well playing a Cleveland police officer who becomes friends with Greene.

While the film is based on events that happened right here in Cleveland, the filming is being done up in Detroit.

Here are some clips of the movie that is scheduled to be released sometime next year:

Eagle Rock To Release 'Mr. Rock 'N' Roll: The Alan Freed Story' on DVD - July 7

On July 7, Eagle Rock Entertainment will add to its extensive DVD roster Mr. Rock N¹ Roll: The Alan Freed Story (Pre-book order date June 9, MSRP $14.99). Eagle has already mastered the art of great music DVDs, from classic rock to heavy metal, from jazz to blues, from hip-hop to funk, including the Live at Montreux series and the acclaimed Classic Albums series. With this DVD, they will explore the roots of the expansive rock music catalogue they represent.

Originally aired as a made-for-television film on NBC, Mr. Rock N¹ Roll tells the story of Alan Freed, the man who coined the term ³Rock N¹ Roll², and who recognized the earth-shattering power that this music had. In the vein of other music films such as Cadillac Records, Dreamgirls, and Ray, this film captures a historic time in music.

......

EDIT: here's a trailer http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/News/The-Alan-Freed-Story-624/

Did anyone ever see American Hot Wax? That was loosely based on Cleveland DJ, Alan Freed too....The music was fantastic and by the original artists. It came out in 1978. Jay Leno and Fran Drescher were in it and one reference to Cleveland was made, about the Indians taking two from the Yankees in a double header. If you haven't seen this and are interested in AF and the classic 50's Rock -n- Roll, check this one out.

my ridiculous family maybe on TV.  The kids (my cousins kids*) had a bright idea to try out for Family Feud.  26 families (all from my extended family) could be on the show.

*  FYI - I have 31 cousins and 29 have at least 2 kids who are teenagers, plus both sets of grandparents and aunt/uncles.

Saw Guy Fieri of Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives at Lucky's yesterday.  The Tipoff column of the PD also said they were filming at Melt and Parkview this past week, so it looks like Cleveland will be included in DD&D's next season!

On a related note, I was wondering if Bobby Flay had anything scheduled when he is in town for Mike Symon's charity event. Perhaps a perogi throw down?

Matt Damon and LeBron James Head to Entourage

Kat Angus

Published: Monday, July 13, 2009

Entourage has received plenty of criticism lately for recycling its storylines, but the HBO comedy isn't having any problems recruiting celebrity guest stars, as TV Guide reports that both Matt Damon and LeBron James will make appearances on the sixth season finale. Although, to be fair, Damon's guest spot serves a double purpose of providing publicity for the actor's charity.

"It wasn't hard to get him," executive producer Doug Ellin told TV Guide Magazine. "Matt came on the phone with me and wanted to do something that focused on his charity, One By One, which helps kids all over the world."

Damon's main role in the finale is to make Vince (Adrian Grenier) feel so uncomfortable that the latter gives a large donation to One By One.

"The joke is that Matt is very passionate about his charity - almost in a stalkerish kind of way," Grenier said. "Vince becomes intimated by his intensity. He ends up bullying Vince into giving much more than he should."

"More than he should," Adrian? That's not a very charitable thing to say.

Damon reportedly also shares a scene with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar Lebron James, and, as Ellis claims, "they just kill it!"

The season finale won't air until Oct. 4, but if you can't wait for more celeb sightings on Entourage, former Friend David Schwimmer will be showing up on the Aug. 2 episode.

CLEVELAND -- What's the one Cleveland spot that makes the best burger or best pizza? That special restaurant off the beaten path that you tell all your friends, they've got to try?

Monday, Guy Fieri, the host of the Food Network's popular show, "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives", was in town at Geraci's learning how their famous pizzas are made.

.......

As it turns out, Chef Fieri has roots here in Cleveland. He has family in town and he's friends with Cleveland celebrity-chef, Michael Symon.

Then I wonder why it took him so long to do a bit on Cleveland.

Anyway, its great publicity for Cleveland's great restaurant scene, some of which is "off the beaten path".

Sorry to go off-topic, but I really hate Geraci's.

Like the show, though. Looking forward to it!

In my opinion, Geraci's makes the best pies in town.  Every once in a while you get a bad one, but when they cook it properly it is fantastic (gotta loved the burned peperoni).

Cleveland rock and dance clubs are serving brunch: After Dark

by John Petkovic / Plain Dealer Reporter

Wednesday July 15, 2009, 10:10 AM

On July 12, the Food Network stopped by the Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland, to tape an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." The place was so packed that owner Mark Leddy didn't get to eat.

Any good host wants to make sure a guest had a good time, right? So I checked in with Food Network's star (and, mega-madman) Guy Fieri to find out what he thought about last week's visit to Cleveland, filming segments for "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

Cleveland Cavaliers' Shaquille O'Neal to host WWE's Monday Night Raw

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

From staff reports

The Summer of Shaq continues to get bigger and better.

First, on June 25, Shaquille O'Neal became a Cavalier when Cleveland traded Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to the Phoenix Suns.

Last week, O'Neal made a trip to China that included a tour of earthquake-devastated areas.

Today, he'll start filming his reality show, "Shaq Vs.", in Pittsburgh.

Shaq gives reality another shot

Superstar basketball player Shaquille O'Neal is giving reality TV a second shot with Shaq Vs. from ABC this August.

Shaq will go up against top-calibre athletes in their chosen sport in a series of competitions, e.g. Michael Phelps in swimming and Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in (American) football.

ABC has picked up five episodes of the one-hour show, according to Variety, with talks going on with cycling star Lance Armstrong to appear as the "Vs." for the sixth episode.

Tennis champ Serena Williams and boxer Oscar de la Hoya may be among Shaq's other "opponents" on the show.

Shaq previously gave reality TV a shot with Shaq's Big Challenge in 2007, where he coached overweight children to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

In Shaq Vs., he will be shown training for each challenge and also negotiating a handicap with his rival of the week.

Good Morning Cleveland anchors are finalists in national contest

By Saimi Bergmann

CantonRep.com staff writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEVELAND — The cheering was so loud that Pete Kenworthy didn’t actually hear the announcement that he was a finalist in a national contest to co-host on “Live with Regis and Kelly.”

“We were watching the show and everybody screamed — the newsroom just erupted, so I didn’t hear it,” Kenworthy said. “Then after the commercial, they announced the women and everybody screamed again for Kimberly.”

Well, for what it's worth..the new Cleveland Cavelier:

Shaq proves to be 'Raw' wrestling talent

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

Pat Galbincea

Plain Dealer Reporter

If Shaquille O'Neal manages his time on the basketball court next season as he did Monday night as guest general manager on World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night Raw" in Washington, Cavs fans will be in for a treat.

On his way to the ring, the personable Shaq came out, shook hands with fans and tore up a Kobe Bryant poster. But the only boos he drew all night was when he said, "Hey D.C., LeBron James told me to tell you hello."

I guess I should have posted this in the Painesville Movie thread (ha ha).

This week marks the 45th anniversary of the release of  "One Potato, Two Potato," an all but forgotten movie shot in my hometown in the early 60's, and the first American film to portray a black/white interracial marriage (despite some claims that it was the much more commercial "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" a couple of years later). While it met with accolades at the Cannes Film Festival (awarding co-star Barbara Barrie best actress award), it received mixed reviews at home (though generally leaning toward the positive). I was in elementary school at the time so I don't remember too much about its production or the town's reaction. It's rarely shown anymore, but it was aired on Turner Classic Movies this past May. I do remember a scene on a school playground in the film, but alas, it wasn't mine; I guess they needed more photogenic kids--LOL.

The small still below shows the co-stars, Bernie Hamilton and Barbara Barrie standing in front of the Lake County courthouse (as an aside, the actor portraying the male lead's father was Robert Earl Jones, father of actor James Earl Jones)

The Irishman, Book to Movie Interview with Author and Agent

Lawyers write. They write briefs, opinion letters, memos, contracts of all sorts and sizes, wills, trusts—I could go on forever. Many write fictionalized stories based on events that happened during the course of their careers. Some of those stories are published and some are made into movies. How does that happen?

Recently I met with Rick Porrello, author of “To Kill the Irishman, the War that Crippled the Mafia” and his agent, Peter Miller, of PMA Literary & Film Management, Inc. They were in Detroit to assist with the filming of the action movie based on Porrello’s book, the true story of mobster, Danny Greene, a violent Irish-American gangster who competed with the Italian mob in 1970’s Cleveland--a competition that provoked a country-wide turf war.

Code Entertainment is producing the movie, which stars Ray Stevenson as Danny Greene, Christopher Walken as loan shark and nightclub owner, Shondor Birns, and Val Kilmer as the Cleveland police detective who befriends Greene. Jonathan Hensleigh directs the film. “They plan to release it by St. Patrick’s Day,” said Porrello.

^^^  I wish I would have known this was on Turner.  It was filmed (admittedly years before I was born) 2 houses down across the street from where I grew up.  Oh well, I will continue to keep my eyes peeled for other showings.

I missed the Turner broadcast too. In fact, I've never seen the entire movie from start to finish. Exactly on what street was it filmed? I know there are scenes in and around the park downtown (where I remember film crews setting up shop), the old Lake Theater, an old art deco movie house on State St.--a remarkable 1500 seats for a town that size--torn down probably before you were born (and which purportedly opened on the same day Hitler invaded Poland in 1939!), and the Fasson plant (don't know if that's even there anymore)--which I believe is where the main characters worked in the film.

The house scenes were filmed on Wood St., across from the HS, in a large home that has since been torn down for a nursing home approx in 1980.

You’ll be pleased to know that Wood St. now falls within the boundaries of a newly-created historic district as deemed by the city council, for whatever it’s worth. (on the other hand, my old neighborhood—the north end—has by now probably been condemned )

http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2009/07/23/news/nh1209545.txt

"The Painesville Planning Commission determined that the historic district will include all the properties from City Hall west on Mentor Avenue to Charter Oak Park on both sides of the street. It also will include both sides of Sterling and Wood streets and a portion of Washington Street from Liberty Street to the bike path, excluding Painesville City Schools property, City Manager Rita McMahon said."
