The Basketball Buckeyes held their second annual Buckeye Classic game over in St. John Arena (a new tradition started last season by Coach Holtmann).  This season they hosted an undefeated Kent State team in a game that was closer than the final score.

The Buckeyes led 35-23 at halftime and had a 40-26 lead with 17:16 remaining when the Golden Flashes went on a 25-8 run to even the score 48-48 with 10:30 left.  Then the 10th-ranked Basketball Buckeyes put the defensive clamps on and went on a 17-0 run to finish with a 71-52 win.

^Kent State came in undefeated, if I'm not mistaken.  So a far cry from a pushover game.  Either way, the Basketbucks are looking good early.  They made it look easy against their toughest test - Villanova - early in the season, but their biggest game yet comes next week against North Carolina.

Very Stable Genius

The 6th-ranked Basketball Buckeyes stormed into the Dean Dome last night and emerged with 25-point victory over 7th-ranked North Carolina.  The game, which was part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (and the Big Ten won 8-6 because of OSU's win), saw the Buckeyes stifling defense hold down the Tar Heels in the second half and allowed them pull away from a two-point halftime lead.

Ohio State's record improves to 8-0 with this win.  The Basketball Buckeyes start Big Ten play against Penn State this Saturday (12/7) and then at Minnesota next Sunday (12/15) before returning to non-conference play against SE Missouri State, Kentucky and West Virginia - before beginning conference play on 1/3 for the rest of the regular season.

The Basketball Buckeyes fell victim to this season's "Top 5 Curse".  Because it seems like when a team is raised into the top 5, they get knocked down.  A bunch of #1's have been beaten this season, Maryland rose to #4 last week and got upset, and after Michigan won a couple of big games to rise to #5 last week, they promptly lost two games.

It didn't help that OSU were without their second-leading scorer - Duane Washington Jr. - who is dealing with a rib injury and is considered day to day.  But it wasn't the offense that was subpar at Minnesota.  Instead it was the defense that let the Buckeyes down in this game.

The loss drops the 9-1 Buckeyes to #5 in this week's AP poll.  So let's hope the Top 5 Curse won't still be in effect when the team plays #6 Kentucky this Saturday in Vegas.

The Basketball Buckeyes improve to 11-1 with another victory over a Top 10 team - this time #6 Kentucky in CBS Sports Classic in Vegas.

The Buckeyes did it with a balanced attack that saw 6 players score at least 8 points.  Washington returned after missing two games to come off the bench for 8 points in only 14 minutes.  Carton also came off the bench for 15 points to lead all OSU players.  Young and Kaleb Wesson each had 10 points with 6 and 8 rebounds respectively.  Kaleb also fouled out with over 3 minutes remaining while the game was still in doubt.  But unlike last season, it didn't spell doom - as the Buckeyes went to a three-guard to finish out the game.

Next Sunday, Ohio State plays #25 West Virginia at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.  Which is the Basketball Buckeyes final non-conference game before they begin their exclusive B1G conference schedule in 2020.

Seeing how well the Buckeyes are doing in both football and basketball reminds me of how we really get by ok without major league professional teams in these sports. They really are like our home team, and are so good.  Also we can enjoy them and know they will not just pick up and leave and become the Boise Buckeyes because we won't cough up a billion dollars for a new stadium or something...in other words we will never have to deal with a Precourt type!

There was a news story on Yahoo recently talking about how well the Ohio economy is doing.  The first line of the video was "When you think of Ohio, at least if you're an east coaster, you probably think of Ohio State football..."  I thought that was interesting considering the amount of pro sports Ohio has.  Also, Travel magazine recently had Columbus as one of the top 10 domestic travel locations for 2019 and mentioned the "legendary football team" among their many other food and drink recommendations.  With the way modern college football is trending, the number of students attending Ohio State increasing every year, and alumni all over the country, I think the Ohio State sports brand will continue to get even bigger and more dominant.  Definitely feels like a professional brand.

I agree. Also I think we should embrace our local culture of Buckeye fandom. So many people see that as a negative but it really is not IMO. It is part of what Central Ohio is and really is part of our "brand" as a city and we should embrace it and put it in the best light possible. Not doing that is like some form of self-hate IMO.

Also without Pro Basketball and Pro Football we can support the teams already in place in Ohio and also occasionally catch a game(close enough to easily drive). And Lord knows looking at the situation of those teams they sure can use the support! ?

Hopefully cleveland comes out n represents! Wish I would've known that they were playing in Cle earlier, dont think I'll be able to get that time off.. Would love to see this team play live! I dont see a final four appearance being out of reach! Hoping for that, as well as my hometown Toledo Rockets first ncaa tourney appearance in my lifetime, since my cavs n redwings are destined to be basement dwellers this year!

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2019/12/111018/ohio-state-west-virginia-instacap

The tough weekend for Ohio State athletics continued on Sunday when the 2nd-ranked Basketball Buckeyes fell 67-59 to 22nd-ranked West Virginia in what was billed as the first annual "Cleveland Classic".  The Buckeyes held a six-point lead at halftime.  But a poor shooting and turnover prone second half doomed the Buckeyes in this non-conference finale.

Ohio State has a few days off before beginning Big Ten play on Friday, Jan. 3 in the Schott against Wisconsin.

The Basketball Buckeyes will be without starting forward Kyle Young for Friday's game against Wisconsin after he had his appendix removed this week.  Young played in last Sunday's loss to West Virginia - finishing with two points and 11 rebounds - but was reportedly throwing up before and after the game.  Then he had his appendix removed after the game on Monday(!)

Young is Ohio State's second-leading rebounder at 6.8 per game, and is the team's fourth-leading scorer at 8.3 points per game.  The team is listing Young as "game-to-game".

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2020/01/111339/offensive-woes-again-doom-ohio-state-in-67-55-loss-to-maryland

The Basketball Buckeyes impressive season has hit a pothole with a third straight loss. Offensive woes have hit the roster with 31.3 percent shooting night in a loss to West Virginia, a 40.4 percent night in a loss to Wisconsin and then a 31.3 percent night in a loss at Maryland last night.

Kyle Young is making a case to be the team MVP because he was out for the last two losses and hampered with appendicitis symptoms during the WV loss(!)  Actually, with Young out, the team is diminished.  With Young, the team can go eight-deep reliably and has a post threat to go along with Kaleb.  Without Young the team can only go seven-deep reliably and opponents can focus solely on Kaleb in the post.  Young is close to returning and could be back in the lineup this Saturday at Indiana.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2020/01/111528/luther-muhammad-duane-washington-jr-suspended-ahead-of-ohio-states-game-against-nebraska

The Basketball Buckeyes snapped their four-game losing streak with a home win against an admittedly weak Nebraska team.  Although Coach Holtmann upped the degree of difficulty by suspending sophomore guards Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr. for the game.  The team won comfortably - but it forced Kaleb Wesson, CJ Walker and DJ Carton to go iron man and play 35, 37 & 38 minutes.

Suspending players has become a habit for Holtmann in all three of his OSU seasons.  Kam Williams and Kaleb Wesson both served suspensions in 2017-18, and Wesson was suspended for three games in 2018-19.

Man...that sure changed quick! I think we're in for a crazy year in ncaa basketball.

The Basketball Buckeyes just lost 90-74 at Penn State - a team the Buckeyes trounced 106-74 a little over a month ago(!)  Even with Muhammad and Washington back in the lineup, this doesn't even look like the same team that got off to an 11-1 start.  They've now lost 4 of their last 5 B1G games.

? cant hate on coach for putting L's on his record.. not sure what happened to this team, or is the b10 just that good this year??    Still time to fix whatever is going on here.   The toledo rockets started pretty nice too, but have sucked ass of late... not a good year for basketball as a fan for me personally.. pro or collegiate

There's plenty of season left.  They could easily play themselves into the tournament our play themselves out of the tournament.  All they have to do is finish .500 in conference and they'll be in the dance.  Even close to .500 might get it done with how bad the ACC is this year.

Idk, b10 is tough, got the W today, but idk if I can see them going 7-4 w the schedule they have.. I think they still might need a good 2 wins in the b10 tourney to make the dance, depending on who we beat these next 11 games..  if we cant dance, hoping for atleast a 20+ win season *Including post season play

The Basketball Buckeyes have played themselves back into the Top 25 with five wins in their last six games.  And oddly - four wins in the five games since Carton left the team.

But the next two B1G games will be tough.  At #20 Iowa tonight and hosting #7 Maryland on Sunday.

The Basketball Buckeyes lost at Iowa last night.  Which is not surprising because they've played like kaka in B1G road games this season.  Here are their B1G road results so far:

L  76-85 at Iowa

L  57-70 at Wisconsin

W 61-58 at Michigan (their only quality road win)

W 71-59 at Northwestern (against team with 1-14 B1G record)

L  76-90 at Penn State

L  54-66 at Indiana

L  55-67 at Maryland

L  71-84 at Minnesota

Very nice home win over #7 Maryland yesterday.  Kyle Young suffers a severe looking ankle sprain in the first half, doesn't play for remainder of the game, but walks back to the bench for the second half.  Team is 18-9 overall and 8-8 in the B1G - now up to #23.

The fact that we're 18-9 overall but only 8-8 in the league (including already gotten swept by unranked Minnesota and Wisconsin) is just mindboggling, especially because the nonleague schedule included Villanova, Kentucky, UNC, and Cincinnati--all of which we won.

Didn't matter in today's game - which was win #2 in the Sunday C-BUS Sports Trifecta(!)

The Buckeyes shot 11-21 from 3 today.  And CBS showed a stat that said when the Buckeyes make 10 3's in a game this season, they've gone 11-0.

I gotta say, I didn't believe the Basketball Buckeyes could do it.  Especially with the loss of Carton and Young.

But with the win over Illinois last night, the team has won 9 of their last 11 B1G games (after a 2-6 start).  They are now 11-8 in the B1G with a 21-9 overall record going into the final regular season game at #16 Michigan State on Sunday.

This isn't a huge surprise, but freshman D.J. Carton announced he will be transferring:  https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28926661/freshman-dj-carton-transferring-ohio-state

Eleven Warriors looks at how Carton's transfer will impact the team going forward:  https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2020/03/112911/how-dj-cartons-transfer-affects-ohio-state-basketball

The TL:DR version of the 11W article is that its C.J. Walker's team now.  The junior transfer from Florida State split time with Carton at point guard and took over once Carton left the team.  In his 11 games without Carton, Walker's point and assist numbers went up along with his minutes - but his turnover numbers decreased.  And whether coincidence or not, the team broke out of its losing streak and went 8-3 with Walker at the point.

Some good news (finally) on the roster front for the Basketball Buckeyes:

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2020/03/112860/harvard-forward-seth-towns-announces-transfer-to-ohio-state

Towns is from Northland High in Columbus but went to Harvard, where he was Ivy League Player-of-the-Year in his sophomore season of 2017-18.  But then he missed the next two seasons with knee injuries and is now set to graduate this spring.  The 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward will be immediately eligible to play for the Buckeyes next season and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining due to the injuries.

Towns was listed by ESPN as the #1 ranked grad transfer and choose OSU over Duke and multiple other schools.

The Basketball Tournament will be played in Columbus, air live on ESPN

The Basketball Tournament, a winner-take-all affair for a seven-figure sum to be held next month, will become the first live televised basketball competition in America since the coronavirus pandemic sidelined sporting events around the world in March.

Featuring former college stars and overseas standouts, the TBT will be held at Nationwide Arena, home of the Columbus Blue Jackets, for a 24-team tournament in Columbus, Ohio, from July 4-14, event officials announced on Thursday.

Now in its seventh year, the TBT prize will be $1 million and the event will air on ESPN, which recently agreed to a three-year extension to televise the TBT, and its family of networks.  Carmen's Crew, a group of former Ohio State players, will seek to defend its 2019 title after defeating the Golden Eagles Alumni, a group of former Marquette standouts, in the championship game.

Former Basketball Buckeye point guard Aaron Craft announced that The Basketball Tournament games to be played in early July in Columbus will be the final games of his professional career.  After playing four seasons at Ohio State, Craft played two seasons in the NBA D-League and then six seasons in Europe.  Craft, 29, will be entering the OSU Medical School in the upcoming Autumn Semester.

In-game TBT interview with Jared Sullinger, the head coach of the OSU alumni team Carmen's Crew.  The interview is interesting, as Sully is confident in his team's chances to repeat as TBT champs.  But its also interesting to see how the TBT handled the no-spectator environment in Nationwide Arena.  On the three sides viewable on TV, they hung gigantic black curtains with a huge TBT bracket in the middle and colorful banners filling out the rest of the space.

I posted another view of this setup in the Columbus Events thread at https://forum.urbanohio.com/topic/7363-columbus-festivals-music-concerts-amp-events/page/10/?tab=comments#comment-968991

Well, shoot.  For all talk about the 2020 Carmen's Crew team being better than their 2019 TBT Championship team and then getting to play the whole tournament in Columbus -- they get bounced in the very first game(!)

The Illinois alum team called House of Paign was a house of pain for the former Basketball Buckeyes.  At least TBT isn't relying on local fan attendance to make this event a success.

Malaki Branham, Ohio’s top 2021 recruit, commits to Ohio State

Ohio State has landed a verbal commitment from Malaki Branham, the top recruit from Ohio in the class of 2021 and a key priority for coach Chris Holtmann.  Branham posted his commitment to social media.  The announcement ends the intrigue and speculation around one of the highest-rated and most tight-lipped recruitments in recent history.

A four-star recruit in the 247Sports.com composite database, the 6-4, 175-pounder from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary never released a list of top schools or favorites.  In the final days leading to his decision, Ohio State, Alabama, Xavier, Louisville and Baylor were all widely considered to be his finalists.

Branham is the No. 27 recruit in the nation.  He is the highest-rated Ohioan to commit to the Buckeyes since Jared Sullinger, who was the No. 4 overall recruit in the class of 2010.  He’s also the first top-rated Ohioan to pick Ohio State since Kaleb Wesson, who was the No. 75 national recruit, in 2017.

With his commitment, Ohio State now has the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation, trailing only Baylor.

With less than a week before tipping off the 2020-21 season, the Basketball Buckeyes released their schedule.  It sure doesn't seem like its time for basketball yet with the shifted football schedule this year, but here it is:

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2020/11/118281/ohio-state-reveals-26-game-basketball-schedule-one-week-before-season-begins

Instead of a 31-game regular season, the NCAA is mandating fewer games - so its six non-conference games and a 20-game Big Ten conference schedule.  The Basketball Buckeyes open at home against Illinois State next Wednesday, Nov. 25.  The two biggest non-conference games are a trip to Notre Dame in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 8 and a matchup with North Carolina in Cleveland on Dec. 19.  Ohio State opens conference play at Purdue on Dec. 16 and concludes with a home game against Illinois on March 6.

Veering over to the women's basketball program for just a moment to note that I am having trouble processing the fact that one of our seniors, and apparently higher scorers, is named Braxtin Miller, which was very, very confusing when I started to hear that name called by announcer on the highlight reel.

https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/buckeyes-claim-another-ranked-win-beat-7-maryland-88-86/

(Also, we're now 9-1 on the season, ranked #14 and almost certain to climb after back-to-back wins over previously undefeated Michigan and now over #7 Maryland.  We had something of a soft decade there after being a borderline powerhouse while I was in school.)
