Anonymous donor saves West Side icon

the-farm*750xx1246-701-9-0.png

A West Side institution that had been scheduled for auction this week has been saved.

Daniel Elsaesser, owner of The Farm banquet hall and event center in Delhi Township, announced Tuesday that an anonymous donor has provided enough money to pay back the taxes that the business owed to the Internal Revenue Service, Local 12 reports.

The Farm, located at 239 Anderson Ferry Road, had been seized by the IRS due to debt of about $126,000 in payroll taxes. The business had continued to operate despite a planned auction of the property that had been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

This dude has hundreds of tax liens going back to 2004. Any bets he still finds ways to not pay his taxes? I’m not sure this anonymous donor did him any favors.  Just end it already.

The whole thing sounds shady.  An anonymous donor?  Sure it wasn't John Barron?

Cincinnati coffee company opening downtown location

A Cincinnati-based coffee company is opening a shop in the Central Business District.

Deeper Roots Coffee has signed a five-year lease for 1,500 square feet of space at 338 W. Fourth St. in the Historic West Fourth District. Les Stoneham, co-owner of Deeper Roots, said the company has long had an eye on this corner of downtown.

“After meeting with the Loring Group folks and hearing their plans and what other folks have envisioned for what West Fourth can be, we enjoyed the idea of being part of that,” Stoneham told me.

Really looking forward to this one and what it (and Nation) will do to improve Westwood.

It’s gonna launch the next ring of investment. Homes along the Epworth Ave spine in the Town Hall area are going for solid prices.
Along with Westwood having Montessori education from k-12 available, these new restaurants really help bring amenities that  create stability.
April 9 is just a working date. There’s a long way to go to get to opening a new restaurant. Much of it isn’t in their control.

West Side developers to open upscale restaurant

The owners of a West Side real estate development group are opening an upscale restaurant in Westwood.

Frank Eversole and Rick Pouliot, owners of EP Investments, are better known for redeveloping historic homes on Cincinnati's West Side. But for their latest venture, the couple is opening the Ivory House restaurant at 2998 Harrison Ave. The goal is to open in early April.

"We live in the West Side, we're westsiders and we love it and the neighborhood has been our focus for the last 10 years," Eversole told me. "There's a lot of movement for new restaurants, and for us selling properties and houses, we know we need nicer restaurants so people can stay and eat and play in their own community."

Yeah pretty much everyone who is a lifer in the restaurant business is an alcoholic and/or druggie.  If you aren't those people gang up on you.

Taste of Belgium owner Jean-François Flechet just discussed this on the Enquirer's podcast:

Quote

How Cincinnati's Taste of Belgium owner Jean-François Flechet is fighting alcohol and drug addiction culture in restaurant industry

The Taste of Belgium owner wrote an impassioned Facebook post about the industry's struggles after two top employees at separate restaurants in Pendleton died this month.

It's not yet known what the men died of, but it sparked an online conversation about restaurant culture. Flechet sat down with The Enquirer's That's So Cincinnati podcast this week to talk more in-depth about the issue.

"The industry is still afflicted by a lot of addiction, a lot of unhealthy behavior," Flechet said. "There is really no other industry where it would be acceptable to drink at work, to have a shot while you're working, to show up hungover. These are things I do not tolerate at Taste of Belgium, but it's widely accepted at other places."

Popular downtown Vietnamese restaurant to close

A popular downtown Vietnamese restaurant from a family that has operated eateries in the region since the 1990s is closing its doors at the end of the month.

Le's Pho and Sandwiches at 3 E. Court St. will be closing its doors Feb. 29. Despite being at the peak of its popularity, the owners of Le's said it's just time to call it quits.

Huyen Bui told me that her parents, Hai Bui and Le Ha, have been running restaurants in the Cincinnati area since the 1990s after their family – refugees from the Vietnam War who came to Pennsylvania in 1975 and came to Cincinnati after they were sponsored by a church in Anderson Township – opened Dragon Le in Norwood, named for Huyen Bui's mother Le Ha.

A longtime Greater Cincinnati restaurant has reopened, the Journal-News reports.

Red’s Hamburger Shop, located at 103 S. Riverside Drive (U.S. 127) in New Miami (Butler County), traces its roots to the early 1960s. It was briefly Mel’s Diner last decade before reopening last week under its old moniker.

I somehow missed this news when it first came out and just had lunch there today and heard it was closing at the end of the month. I love Le's and will be very sad to see them go. I feel like the Court Street makeover was really banking on having anchors like Le's and Bridges on the opposite end to help give it a certain vibe. Hopefully something else moves in that is just as authentic because that's what will help distinguish Court street from OTR; smaller, less polished (and less expensive) diverse food options.

I was talking to my brother on the phone tonight and he relayed that some guy he went to high school with was on Facebook complaining that he's laid off and only has a week of cash.  So the guy has been tending bar for 10+ years but somehow at age 37 he only has a week's worth of cash.

Your tips are going to their drug and cigarette and alcohol habits.  Don't feel sorry for these people.

What about me, delivering pizzas when I was in college? This would've been devastating. What about the waitress at your favorite diner with two kids at home? What about the bartender at the bar downtown that I love, who is working to put herself through college? The list goes on.

Come on, man. Don't be an idiot.

I saw some stats today that said roughly 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

Additionally, after the death of two people in Pendleton last month, the issue of drug abuse is one that many restaurateurs were working to address in the Cincinnati area up until the recent pandemic.

Not every bartender and server is an addict, actually I bet it is not even close to a majority. Therefore its unproductive to make such general accusations and assumptions. As a matter-of-fact, its hurtful.

There are better, more articulate ways, for your to frame your arguments. I would recommend you take some time to critically review your statements before posting them to this forum.

It will be interesting to see how different restaurants take different approaches weathering the storm.

Please, which is a high-end restaurant that did not offer any take-out before this happened, decided to close completely rather than try to modify their business model to support take-out.

Arnold's shifted to delivery/pick-up only, but once they sold out of the food in their walk-in and freezer (which happened last night), they announced that they are going to lay off their staff and close. They will re-evaluate the situation on March 24.

Also, as a side node, I'm seeing a lot of people who are shocked that restaurants/bars are laying off their staff during the closure. Everyone should keep in mind that Ohio is expediting unemployment benefits for people who are laid off due to COVID-19. If these restaurants did not lay off their staff, kept them "on the payroll" but working 0 hours, I don't think they would qualify for unemployment.

If you are a bar/restuarant worker who has been laid off, please read this Twitter thread which has some great information about how to apply for benefits.

We might actually be getting some insights into the profitability of various products at these different restaurants. If one just stops everything there's a better chance that they were making all their money off of drinks while being near breakeven on food. Whereas a place that's still banging out takeout and delivery has a better margin on their food.

L is the first well-known local restaurant to announce that they won't reopen; more will follow:

Stuff isn't going to return to normal immediately.  So all restaurants are facing 2-3 bad months after having been completely closed for 2-3 months.

More will follow sadly. These places with huge rent burdens can't simply stop the cash flow and expect to survive.
