Charter One Small Business Grant Program at 5th Street Arcades

Small business entrepreneurs have an opportunity to secure grants to help their companies grow or launch in downtown Cleveland through the Downtown Cleveland Alliance 5th Street Arcades Retail Development Grant Competition in the Gateway neighborhood. The competition is a program of the Charter One Growing Communities initiative, a project aimed at boosting economic and neighborhood development.

This program makes me want to start a retail business...somehow!

Business plan competition set for would-be downtown Cleveland retailers

By STAN BULLARD

8:23 am, January 29, 2013

Would-be retailers who want to set up shop in downtown Cleveland, ready your business plans.

Charter One Bank and the nonprofit Downtown Cleveland Alliance are joining with the 5th Street Arcades — the new name for the former retail section of Colonial Marketplace — with a small business grant competition.

Grants from $1,500 to $20,000 will be available to aid in opening or expanding into the 5th Street Arcades through the competition, which is financed by the Charter One Growing Communities initiative, a project aimed at boosting economic and neighborhood development.

Where did you hear that the Severance Ballys will be opening again? I looked and couldnt find anything about it. just stories from when they closed and management said itd be filled quickly (almost a year ago now). If it does, thatd be great as it would take out the one vacant spot on that corner of the shopping center

Not sure if this was mentioned already (search is broken!) but some company called RED Fitness 24/7 has bought up a bunch of local Bally's gyms, and they automatically transitioned me to a member of the red fitness gym. I mean, that's ok since I will be going to the same location, but it would have been nice to have been asked if I want to leave a national chain and go to a local one that's so small/new they don't even have a website. But am trying to stay positive. I talked to a girl who works at the gym and she seems to think the changes they will bring will for the better. And (so far) my rates aren't going up, which are still the absolute cheapest in town, so I will wait and see what it brings.

I'm not sure what all locations they have purchased, but am pretty sure it includes both the Brookpark and Broadview Hts locations, the latter being the one I go to. They sure couldn't make the gym much worse than it is already, so here's hoping.

There's one across the street from me in Northfield Plaza, but it looks really tiny.  If they're just local, they're at least spread out.

I somewhat get the rationale for prohibiting a tattoo parlor wihtin 1000 feet of a day care, church, etc........... but what's the reason for restricting such uses near a strip club?

Meant to post this the other day. Kate Spade is now open in Beachwood Place, and right next door Michael Kors is set to open on the 20th. Add two new brands into the Cleveland market!

A place called Tops and Bottoms...a Gentleman's Club...I had no idea it was right in the backyard until someone said they had gone there.

It's been there.... perhaps under a different name.... since at least 2009-2010.  I recall walking to a Cavs game back then and being surprised to notice it there.  I want to say it was called something similar to The Executive's Den (aka 'The Euclid Ballet') on Marginal and I assumed it was the same owner

It would have to be after mid year 2010.  According to friends 727 closed in 2010

The main "Den" is right off 90 by E. 200th.  In 2008 I was living with a dancer there so I knew a couple of them pretty well.  They hated working downtown for typical suburban reasons, ironically enough, and the place was pretty marginal (pun intended).  IIRC though, it was on Superior by 14th or so.

Give him a break. We're all discombobulated after the Timequake

Nice name for it.  :)

2:30am shooting at a "gentleman's club".  This almost doesn't qualify as news.  "Nothing good happens after 2am".

If security was not involved (one way or the other) they were likely distracted.  Getting the dancers to their cars is a major and well organized operation at any club not at the absolute bottom of the barrel.

Eton parking update:  Apparently Apple store now offers valet parking due to parking hassles and Brooks Brothers, which has a half dozen dedicated and reserved spaces right in front of their store, one down from Apple, has an employee outside playing parking police, escorting people in store, and telling them to move from spaces  if they don't enter store first.

and this is before Tiffany opens... Eton... you have a problem.

Jeeze, and I already hated parking here before all of this. Perhaps Ill start parking across the street and walking... or is that lot marked for that center only?

At Eton I've always been able to find plenty of spots open in the northwest corner, and just walk through the mall. Probably nearing the end of that.

I know Eton uses the across the street strip center and 3-4 story office building parking for valet on busy nights already..  If I were Stark - I'd buy that strip center (where Original Pancake House is, etc...) and move Trader Joe's there - and you gain parking too...

LOL!  Rodney's classic line "I don't know if you are familiar with who runs that business, but I can assure you it isn't the boy scouts" doesn't only apply to waste disposal.

Though the Den was a little different in that it was completely female managed and operated.

I would be interested in seeing what makes some of these stores decide to open in the market when they do. Things like income level thresholds, to space opening up etc. In my line of work I'm privy to some real estate deals that happen or almost happen, but not on the retail side of things.

In the case of Tiffany, NEO (16th or so in population) is the only one of the 30+ largest metros without a Tiffany, so would seem long overdue. Why it took them so long and why they ended up at Eton after years of Beachwood Place rumors = an interesting question.

Also, Tiffany is building one of their new, smaller prototype stores, which is half the size of the (very dated looking, though not that old) old concept Columbus store ( and less than half as big as the nearby, local Alson's), so they will have significantly less overhead. And much of their business is in silver these days.... Lots of $100-$200 sales...not necessarily $10,000-$20,000 rings, etc..Should do very nicely with pent up demand.

Will be interesting to see how consumers unfamiliar with their business model respond to the "we don't have sales" aspect of a jewelry store like Tiffany, when pretty much every other jewelry store customers have shopped locally for years promotes with sales. (I personally prefer the Tiffany model, as you know an item will never be lower due to sale later, etc...)

Thats because Tiffany was once only in luxury markets.  Now Tiffany (and Swarovski) has gone main stream, while competitors like Cartier & Choppard remain out of touch with average consumers.

Tiffany is trying to expand the brand and sales by opening markets to regular consumers on the retail side.

Has anyone benn in the 5th Street Arcade(s) lately? They've really cleaned the place up and have some pretty cool new stores that have opened recently. It doesn't seem like they've got a lot of press lately.

^It got some press when Dick Pace first master leased all the retail space and Charter One Bank held its biz plan contest.  It's an awesome model for retail development for our city.  Great to see all the businesses are, in fact, opening up as anticipated.  I hope downtown residents and workers throw their business their way.

^There's a cool museum store in there that combines the gift shop of CMA, the Rock Hall, Museum of Natural History and a few other institutions. A joint store is a great idea---and its a great place to pick up cool Cleveland institution gifts without leaving Downtown.
