Brecksville: Sherwin-Williams Research & Development Center

Recommended Posts

There's a fiscally conservative argument for steering development within the traditional, centralized the area where huge infrastructural investments have already been made. Then again I suppose the other side of the argument would be that it doesn't make sense to re-invest somewhere where corruption or ineptitude makes the investment a bad one.

SHW's decision, when it all comes to fruition someday, will be fascinating to really look at more in-depth. There's just so many angles to consider.

Brecksville, DiGeronimo fine-tune big development plan

Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby in an email said he is in discussions with "several companies" for possible investments in the suburb 13 miles south of downtown Cleveland, but that Sherwin-Williams is not among them.

Asked if he was in talks with representatives of Sherwin-Williams or others working on its behalf in that site-selection process, Hruby wrote in a follow-up email, "If you can not accept my previous answer, I am sorry."

Thanks KJP!

I may be 1244 miles away, but still have the pulse on my hometown.

You should move back home  -    We need all the people that left Cleveland for Greener Pastures to come back home.

( Texas, Florida, Carolinas, California, Denver, Seattle, Columbus , ETC ETC ETC.

Man we probably could substantially increase our population if we brought back everyone.

Sherwin-Williams seeks Bedrock site for R&D

It seems that Sherwin-Williams' (SHW) new research and development (R&D) facility may not wander far from home after all, according to three high-level sources who asked not to be identified.

In light of SHW executives wanting the new R&D facility to be built as close as possible to their company's new headquarters (HQ), the global coatings giant is reportedly in negotiations with Bedrock Cleveland and its lawyers at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP to secure land for its R&D site.

That site, which SHW had previously considered as the runner-up for its expanded and consolidated HQ facilities, is located between Tower City Center and the Cuyahoga River. It was previously considered for Bedrock's phase two casino but Bedrock has since been exiting the casino business.

There, on 19.6 acres of land it owns, Bedrock plans to build the riverfront phase of its CityBlock development featuring a mix of offices, a hotel, apartment towers and possibly SHW's R&D facility.

This is the perfect spot. Maybe they can do a land swap. Bedrock gets the Landmark building to do a residential conversion. Seeing their work on the May Co., I’d love to see that happen. Everyone wins, and the CBD will be closer to getting built out.

I can see SHW swapping its Breen property for Bedrock's upper parking lot for Tower City. But I can't see SHW trading its Landmark Building for anything other than a big pile of cash. FWIW, Millennia bought the slightly larger 925 Euclid for $40 million.

  • 2 weeks later...

And there's a chance they may have the story right. I heard from one source over the weekend but the R&D was going to Brecksville. But since it was only one source and that SHW was engaging in a disinformation campaign, I chose not to report.  Even my source thought it was a bit out there....

So what went wrong with the bedrock site negotiations

What the hell is with this city? Essentially more poaching from the city to the suburbs. It never freaking ends.

Except for there will also be poaching going on the other way around as well.  There will be jobs from Strongsville and other locations that will be consolidated into the headquarters.  Let's not forget based on reports we will still have 5,000 jobs downtown (up from 3,300).  We just will have 1000 jobs also in Brecksville.  Disappointing? Yes.  But it's not like the city is simply continuing a losing streak.

We should probably wait on an announcement for details. We don’t know anything about an agreement of any sort. Maybe (pure speculation) Sherwin Williams will give the Breen space to an expanded canal basin park for instance. There are other types of victories.

I've found the coordinated leaks pretty interesting. When KJP didn't bite on the source feeding him the Breckville story, it went to a WKYC reporter. Not to say the story isn't true (I have no idea), but the back and forth on the various R&D locations stinks of negotiation tactics.

The HQ complex should be more employees than the original HQ+R&D site so I guess it is still a plus for Cleveland. But can't help but swallow the bitter pill. Hopefully developing the riverfront wasn't a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I am told there will be a press release tomorrow. I don't yet know what will be in it. Still checking.

When I hear from Sherwin Williams tomorrow that they are not leaving Cleveland and that eyesore on Public Square will be no more; I’m not putting too much focus on the RD facility. I get the disappointment though.

I honestly wouldn't blame Crains/Bullard, depending on the outcome that's the mayor protecting one hell of an NDA and project.
