Prague 2018

Recommended Posts

Over Christmas and New Years 2018-19 I traveled to Europe with a couple of friends. I will link to the other topics once I create them.

Munich, Germany: December 21-24

Vienna, Austria: December 24-27

Prague, Czechia: December 27-29

Berlin, Germany: December 29-January 3

Zermatt, Switzerland: January 3-5

Thun, Switzerland: January 5

Bern, Switzerland: January 5

Zurich, Switzerland: January 5-7

After a few nights in Vienna we made our way to Prague, Czechia. The only non-German stop on our trip. It's also one of the most beautiful places I've been. After Vienna, I was expecting smoking allowed in bars in Prague as well, but they were all smoke-free. We arrived at night. I didn't bring my camera out for the first night, but brought it everywhere else on our trip. We only spent two nights in Prague, unfortunately. It's definitely worth a second visit.

There are a lot of photos from Prague. Bear with me here.

I believe these murals were painted on the facades of the buildings.

We tried and failed to read the plaque in front of this tree. The only thing we really know is that it's a really old tree. We tried to use the Google translate feature with our phones, but we didn't really get a clear understanding. We named it Platan Ibrahimović because the word "platan" refused to translate, so we assumed it was the proper name of the tree (I know we're wrong)

A lot of photos below are along Masarykovo nábř, a street that fronts the Vltava River and has great views of the Prague Castle and some of the most imposing old architecture in the city.

The Charles Bridge crosses the Vltava River and connects Old Town with Malá Strana at the base of Prague Castle. The bridge began construction in 1357 under King Charles IV, and was finished in the early 15th Century. This was the only route across the Vltava River until 1841.

Touching the dog was good luck, or something. So naturally it was heavily worn.

The bridge was packed, and I can only imagine how crowded it would be in the summer months during peak travel season. It also didn't help that there were buskers on the bridge and crowds would form around them and block the path for everyone else.

The hill going up to Prague Castle is pretty steep and provides some great views of the city, including skyscrapers in the business district off in the distance.

We entered the castle! The central feature of Prague Castle is St. Vitus Cathedral. And, of course, there's a Christmas Market in the square.

The next day we went around the Old Town area before we got on a train to Berlin. The Astronomical Clock is the main attraction in Prague, and I got a couple of photos before we headed out.

Prague, although beige, is architecturally stunning.  The food....not so much!

There are some streets that look right out of history.  On some blocks you can see buildings that look like they did in 1940, across the street buildings with graffiti that look like they right out of 1985.  Next door the neighborhood restaurant.

Looking forward to your Berlin photos. Will be heading there this fall for the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. Prague was a great city when I visited two years ago. Great architecture, food and cheap delicious beer .

The first thing I noticed about Prague was the color of the streetlights. All of the lights in Vienna and Munich had been updated to an LED or some other bright white light. The ones in Prague were still the dark yellow lights you imagine in film noir.
