schenectady is a city in schenectady county, ny, of which it is the county seat. it’s in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, albany, which is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast. as of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,135 and its notable as a place where outsiders cannot pronounce the name of it. the name "schenectady" is derived from a mohawk word, skahnéhtati, meaning "beyond the pines." by 1824 more people worked in manufacturing than agriculture or trade. it’s the birthplace of general electric and has historic ‘g.e.’ homes you can buy for a song. so come on up, freeze your arse off three quarters of the year and enjoy schenectady.

lastly, just to clarify ----- schenectady vs synecdoche:

****   i hope you enjoyed a chilly weekend upstate visit to schenectady, with a little of its history and more than a bit of a tribute to gonzo film maker charlie kaufman’s eternally spotless mind tossed in ---- i suppose we are all now well connected to schenectady, but not wholly of it   ****

somebody on ssp had asked about the ge homes:

the ge 'realty plot' homes are all on large equally spaced lots, all built at same time, with different styles, like with tudor mixed in or some with columns. there are unique homes as well as a few styles that somewhat repeat. these are the solid craftsman era styles 1900s-1920s.

there are also craftsman era homes elsewhere around town, but they were smaller and on tighter lots just as in other cities. the ge versions are supersized.

the ge realty plot history is quite interesting as it was built as a neighborhood for ge researchers, so many patents were developed in the neighborhood because of course researchers took things home.

here is more about it:

Oh Lawd.  Trust me it was no rest.  Just busy with life.

I saw Synecdoche, New York a few years back and I'm still not sure if I actually liked the movie or not, but I do think about it all the time. Not many movies stick with you the way that one does. As for the city, it's yet another gem upstate. I especially love the Stockade area. The whole capital district has a great, almost spooky vibe to it.
