Death Penalty

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere - I did a search and couldn't find a relevant topic.

A current story - https://eji.org/news/alabama-to-execute-michael-eggers-despite-severe-mental-illness

Michael Eggers is facing an execution date this Thursday, March 15, without legal help because a judge allowed him to fire his attorneys and abandon his appeals despite strong evidence that he is severely mentally ill.

Mr. Eggers has a personal and family history of mental illness. His brother is institutionalized in a mental hospital with schizophrenia, and family observed that Mr. Eggers showed symptoms similar to his brother.

Jail and prison authorities recognized Mr. Eggers's mental illness and treated him with anti-psychotic medications. Correctional officers observed he was paranoid, delusional, and suicidal, and placed him in protective custody after he tried to kill himself.

It appears Mr. Eggers will be executed in two days.

The death penalty is extremely sad and barbaric.

It has always bothered me when so-called Pro-Life people argue strongly in favor of the death penalty.  It really boggles my mind.

Even from a practical standpoint the death penalty makes no sense.  Ronald Philips was found guilty in August 1993 and wasn't executed until June 2017.  That's nearly 24 years of legal appeals and other costs of having him on death row.  It would have cost less to have him serve life in prison which is certainly no picnic.  I guess the Shylocks of the world are so blinded by their need for a pound of flesh that they can't see the value of human life.

After a brief 3 year hiatus, Ohio executed two people last year. The first was Ronald Phillips, a man whose crime serves as a perfect example of why Ohio needs the death penalty.

In all seriousness, Ram23[/member] (and eastvillagedon[/member] and anyone else), I would suggest reading this book - http://bryanstevenson.com/the-book/

I know several people who were formerly pro-death penalty who have changed their mind since reading it.

I used to be pro-death penalty until I became a criminal defense attorney. Our criminal system is broken. I've seen a lot over the years.

Edit: The inherent bias in our system is astounding. Race, gender, socioeconomic status often determines sentencing.

Most murders are committed for reasons involving revenge.  Having a death penalty says that we endorse the concept of revenge killing but the devil's in the details.  Still an eye for an eye though.  I don't think it dissuades anybody.  If anything it tells people to go right ahead.  Either we solve problems with individuals through killing or we don't. The middle ground is hard to defend.

An Ohio inmate was executed Wednesday for choking and stabbing a man to death he met in a bar in 1985.

The execution of Robert Van Hook by lethal injection was carried out at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Prison warden Ron Erdos announced the time of death as 10:44 a.m.

During the execution, Van Hook, weeping, told his victim’s sister, brother and brother-in-law, “I’m very sorry for taking your brother away from you.”

He then recited a poem and began singing which stopped after two minutes when the drugs took effect.

At the time of the killing, Van Hook was suffering from long-term effects of untreated mental, physical and sexual abuse as a child and was depressed that his life seemed to be falling apart, his attorneys argued.

This same judge has a trust he set up to distribute to his children only if they married a white Christian.  But we are told by the "reasonable" conservative on this forum that there is no racism anymore.

Huh, he was one of the "Texas Seven." I remember that ordeal and the America's Most Wanted episode that led to their capture.

This guy was in prison for 30 years for beating an infant nearly to death when he decided to escape, commit a spree of robberies, and murder a police officer along the way. He never had much of a defense and there's no evidence he was treated any differently than the rest of the "Texas Seven," all of whom received death sentences for the police officer's murder, and most of whom have already been executed.

Jim Petro was a GOPer I usually supported. A pretty moderate, thoughtful guy.....
