Research shows that immigrants, both undocumented and documented, actually commit fewer crimes than US-born citizens https://t.co/YU6tSoFR5V

This guy probably should be not be deported but ABC News should actually at least pretend do the work of a journalist. It's not "news" without all the facts.

He wasn't an Oxy addict who got screwed by the system. His "drug charge" was because he delivered a two pound brick of coke to an undercover cop. Street value of about $50-100k. It's very likely he was not dealing with the nicest people and it's why he ended up serving 7 years.

My immigrant wife and her immigrant friends have taught me a bitter lesson -- the noble American immigrant struggle is a lie. If you think you're coming to America to get rich, better turn around and go home. It costs a fortune to come into America and the odds are against you getting good jobs after you arrive. America's ladder of success was destroyed by those at the top. If you're coming to avoid persecution, you'll have to decide if the hate crimes here are less than the abuse back home. Hopefully the immigrant is coming to start a family or reunite with family. That's about the only option that returns value from enduring America's demeaning immigration process.

Coming to America

YOUNGSTOWN

Alicia Prieto-Langarica, a math professor at Youngstown State University, remembers flying into Texas when she was studying there as an undergrad.

A customs agent looked at her, looked at her papers, looked back at her and said her papers were fake.

“Mexicans are stupid, so clearly you cannot be doing a Ph.D. in math,” Prieto-Langarica recalled him saying.

The border agent kept coming back into the room and asking her to multiply large numbers by memory, she said.

After an hour and a half, Prieto-Langarica was allowed to enter the country.

My wife's family has taught me almost the exact opposite lesson. Obviously not every immigrant to the US is going to find an easy life here - that's never been the case. I'd wager that those who come here today have it better off than at any point in the history of our country, though. My great grandparents who immigrated from Ireland and Germany over 100 years ago probably didn't step foot into anything remotely as rosy as those immigrating here today. I'd also wager that of all the developed and desirable countries on the planet, the US has one of the easiest immigration processes.

Did they come here after 9/11? My neighbors from Belarus who came here in 1995 said it was a virtual cakewalk to come to America before 9/11. I looked into Canada's immigration process for my own future relocation and, compared to ours, it is so much easier.

Regarding climbing the ladder of success, it is much more difficult for everyone including US citizens and thus by extension more difficult for new immigrants. All of this has been well documented and bears out in the lack of rising incomes among all but the most enriched.

So it is okay to get served food by them first, then detain them. FYI the people they detained are documented they just did not have the docs on them. Still detained them and hauled them away. ICE-Gestapo a-holes. Insanity.  https://t.co/vQEbPs4mRu

The Daily Beast is fake news (I wouldn't have bothered to click if you hadn't tricked me with that URL shortener). Here's the actual story:

ICE says three men arrested at Ann Arbor restaurant were in US illegally

http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2017/05/ice_3_detained_in_ann_arbor_re.html

"Sergio Cardenas Rubio and Jesus Ortiz Hernandez unlawfully entered the United States without inspection at an unknown date and location. Mohamed Souman lawfully entered the country, but did not depart in accordance with the terms of his status. All three are currently in ICE custody."

It seems to me like ICE did exactly what they are supposed to do. Most legal immigrants know they are required to carry documentation at all times. That's been the law for a long, long time.

^^ Given ICE's description of how Sergio and Jesus got into the US, this is actually one of those cases where a physical manifestation of The Wall may very well have prevented this from happening.

^ You're getting a little bit closer to real news but still living in the realm of fake news. The article I linked is more recent than that one, and includes a statement from ICE saying that they are not only still in custody, but indeed in the country illegally.

Here's another reputable source (as opposed to the inaccurate Daily Beast and "alternative" tabloid stories linked above):

The people taken into custody were released on Wednesday evening, after the restaurant owner’s company, Savco Hospitality, sent the workers’ documents to ICE.

It looks like Fox News may be the only real news on this particular issue:

http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2017/05/25/ice-agents-eat-breakfast-at-ann-arbor-restaurant-before-arresting-three-workers.html

The Detroit Metro Times initially reported that all three were released in the afternoon after they provided proper paperwork, but a representative for ICE confirmed on Wednesday evening that all three men were in the country illegally, and that they remained in ICE custody as of 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Michigan Daily, on the other hand, reports that two of the detainees had been released, with only one spending the night in custody.

No matter what the outcome, this is exactly what ICE is tasked to do. If some/all of those arrested are indeed here and working legally, they should have had their documentation on their persons, as is required by law.

^ wait a minute.  ICE went there looking for a specific person.  That person wasn't there.  They took it upon themselves to arrest 4 people (without a warrant).  I can't wait to hear what the probable cause was because it sounds like 3 innocent people had their civil rights violated.  No other way to slice it.

Okay, I'll bet there are some ACLU people here (probably at this very minute). This is getting ugly. Apparently at a city council meeting the other night a bunch of people spoke out against the new policy to notify ICE of illegal immigrants suspected of committing serious crimes ("Earlier this month the Painesville Police Department adopted Police Policy 413, which states officers will notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when a suspected illegal immigrant is affiliated with any gang or criminal organization and/or receives any drug or violence charge."). 1) what's wrong with this policy?? (even in NYC, I think this is in sync with ultra-liberal Mayor deBlasio's policy); and 2) when did Painesville become so liberal?!?! (It's not Berkeley, for heaven's sake!!) Yet they continue to claim it's not a sanctuary city--unlike NYC which openly embraces that description. I appreciate the fact that these immigrants have enlivened a town that was on a downward spiral for decades and that most of them are extremely hard-working and law-abiding, but (unless I'm misreading the new policy) I fail to see the problem in reporting those suspected of engaging in serious crimes.  Now this--

Ohio ACLU sends letter to Painesville Police Department over immigration policy

http://www.news-herald.com/general-news/20170525/ohio-aclu-sends-letter-to-painesville-police-department-over-immigration-policy

By Andrew Cass, The News-Herald

POSTED: 05/25/17, 3:11 PM EDT |

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio sent a letter May 25 to the Painesville Police Department urging it to discontinue a new policy the ACLU says “invites blatant and unlawful racial profiling.”

“This policy makes the entire Painesville community — especially its many immigrant families — less safe,” Ohio ACLU staff attorney Elizabeth Bonham said in a statement. “Local police should be seen as a resource for the entire community, but by enforcing federal immigration laws, victims of crimes who are undocumented, or those victims who have family or friends without citizenship status, will be less likely to seek police help.”

id say that short excerpt you posted has one rational argument as to why it is bad policy and another rational argument why the policy may be unlawful, no matter how well intentioned.

thanks for alerting me to this series of reports-- http://www.ideastream.org/tags/unsettled-immigration-in-ohio

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think most people who live in Painesville (and many in Lake County) are saying that immigrants haven't been an asset to the community. They've helped to keep the economy afloat, and even thrive, reversing a decades-long downward spiral, and most welcome them. The controversy remains--as it is across the country--about how to deal with illegal immigration. Painesville's recent immigration policy remains a work in progress

Painesville task force to review controversial immigration policy

Updated on June 22, 2017 at 4:36 PM Posted on June 19, 2017 at 9:43 PM

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/06/painesville_task_force_to_review_immigration.html

PAINESVILLE, Ohio--At a long meeting with a couple hundred participants, some tearful, Painesville announced Monday, June 19, 2017, that it has formed a citizens' task force to review a controversial policy to report immigrants charged with certain crimes or suspected of certain affiliations.

City Manager Monica Irelan was away at a conference, but her statement was read into the record promising the committee.

"We have heard the concerns loud and clear about the language in the policy," her statement said. "The policy is still under review."

U.S. now bans Iranian grandmothers from seeing their grandchildren, in a truly shameful exhibition of blind hostility to all Iranians.

The link is a tweet from anti American Iranian Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran is not on the Visa waiver program, Iranians can just buy a plane ticket and visit the USA with a passport. The only Muslim country on the waiver program is Brunei, and they should be taken off of it as they have legalized death sentence for homosexuals.

Iranians cannot visit the US due to the Muslim ban unless they have a bona fide relationship which excludes grandparents.  He is 100% correct.

Why is this in the immigration thread when it is about a travel visa? Nobody is ever guaranteed a travel visa to the USA.

The ban affects immigrants since they you know, have to travel here.

Travel visa is totally different than a visa that allows you to live and work permanently in the United States, AKA Green Card. Anyway it is temporary.

How long does Trump need to improve the vetting process?  He originally said 90 days.  That was the entire purpose of the ban, or whatever he wants to call it.  We are nearing 180 days into his term.  Is it another one of those "who knew it would be so complicated" issues for him?  Was this all just for show?  I'm starting to think so...

^ He should already have the vetting process in place.  The Muslim was arbitrary to begin with.  It doesn't make us any safer.  It just placates "his base" that live in places where there are no immigrants anyway.

I'm thinking it's likely that Trump discovered that the existing vetting process was already very good, so there isn't a whole lot to change there.  The ban attempts are probably just to show his base he's trying to do something to stick it to those dirty Muslims so that they keep worshipping him, regardless of their effectiveness, constitutional legality or economic/social consequences- you know, like everything else he does.  The given reasoning that they needed time to look at vetting was BS from the beginning.

There is a difference between normal visa applications, be that residency or travel, and refugee admittance. Sometimes relative to refugee admittance there are no records because the country or origin is a failed state and no records.
