Campaign season is heating up.   Will be interesting to see if there is a reduction in ads now that many are saying Ohio is no longer a swing state.

Ohio's not a swing state?

There was much debate after Trump won by 8 points here in 2016.

My own opinion is that Biden can bring back in much of the blue collar workers in Youngstown etc that Trump won, making it much more interesting i 2020.

I think Biden will undoubtedly do better than Clinton. A lot of Democrat World seem to have written us off though, with the focus (rightly) on our three ever-so-slightly bluer sister states of MI WI PA.

This is due to the permanent blue-ing of Virgina, Colorado, etc, while the rust belt has gotten redder. It shifted the mean swing state a little bit and basically Wisconsin is now what Ohio was 8 years ago.

We had a good run of always voting for the winner for a century (except one time I think?). We'll see what happens in Nov.

Sooooo...what's everyone doing this weekend?

And the nuts are responding.  Already threats to end the lockdown with armed force in Michigan, among others.  Who else had "incite violence against state that voted for him" in their Trump Holy-Sh**-This-Is-Really-Happening bingo card?

Great line:
"Did anyone really think Trump would rise to the occasion of this crisis? Far from drawing forth some latent leadership ability that lay dormant for 73 years (or even an iota of previously undetected humanity), the sheer extremity of the crisis has brought out the worst in him, which is really saying something. For even with our Marianas Trench-low expectations, Trump’s behavior has been jawdroppingly appalling."

And

I fully expect him to dial up that mob when he loses reelection this November and he claims the deep state rigged the vote. His rubes will encircle the White House with their popgun codpieces and confederate-flagged monster trucks and dare the nation and its military to remove him by force. I hope that all those who join this mob will be arrested peacefully or killed if necessary.

Americans don't know how good they have it. But sure, protest being responsible to your communities. Such mental midgets....

On Friday, none of that stopped the president from contradicting his own message by sending out tweets encouraging protesters in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia to fight their states’ shutdowns.

China did not allow Wuhan, Nanjing or other cities to reopen until intensive surveillance found zero new cases for 14 straight days, the virus’s incubation period. Compared with China or Italy, the United States is still a playground.

Americans can take domestic flights, drive where they want, and roam streets and parks. Despite restrictions, everyone seems to know someone discreetly arranging play dates for children, holding backyard barbecues or meeting people on dating apps.

Its the difference between the top down one sized fits all approach that you see in authoritarian governments vs the capitalistic approach of giving people the information they need to make an informed decision, treating them like adults and letting them weigh the individual risk that they are going to create for themselves. It is saying that social distancing is what needs to be done, but we will give you some latitude in how to accomplish that. It does not need to be the same way for everyone.

Here is what is going to happen- Most states are going to open to fast, too early.  Infections and deaths are going to skyrocket again and it'll be a summer of chaos, civic unrest and bumbling, absentee leadership that does nothing but point fingers.  The economy will not begin to recover anytime soon, and in fact, later analysis will show that opening too early actually served to just make the downturn more severe.  Trump will probably lose the election, but claim the results are illegal/fake or that national crisis dictates he should remain and refuse to leave office.  His army or intellectual saps will rally to protect him and we'll enter a new stage of the nightmare.

Exactly  -- as soon as the government provides the resources (mass testing capability) to give people the information they need to make an informed decision, tested-negative individuals will be free to weigh the risk themselves.

If 17k dead under Obama/Biden is a disaster, what is 41k dead under Trump?

Not to mention there were only 3,400 deaths in the US. Not sure where he got 17k.

Edit: I guess the 3,400 number is confirmed deaths. Estimates of actual deaths were 8k to 18k.

Found this to ring true:

The doomsday preppers who've spent their lives preparing to hunker down during a crisis are the same people completely unable to deal with the stresses of a 1 month stay-at-home guideline. They didn't last 2 weeks without breaking down, yet somehow everyone else is the snowflake.

The very cynical view of the Gov of Georgia opening up business over the next 5 days might be to help in the next election. I’m not normally this cynical but it does make sense. The governor was the secretary of state of Georgia and cleared the voting rolls and made voting very difficult for minorities so he could get elected.  There are two senate seats from Georgia up in 2020 plus the presidential. If he opens people are going to die.  For the past two weeks, the media has been screaming about how the minorities are taking the brunt of this.  I would not doubt that the governor there is thinking “oh, really!”

The immigration ban is Trump trying to change the subject and I hope we don't let him.

This is correct. It is red meat for the base and essentially irrelevant.  The borders are closed and international flights are effectively halted.  For all intents and purposes, immigration is already shut down.

What does halting immigration have to do with stopping the spread of the virus that is already widely here in the country?  We're the epicenter of the pandemic, on track to account for 1/3 of all cases globally in just a few days.

It's best to just ignore this announcement. Trump is trying different tactics to improve his coverage.  He is trying everything short of actually focusing on the problem at hand and leading because he is not capable.

My question was tongue-in-cheek.  The country can't simultaneously be ready to begin "reopening" and the pandemic is so bad we have to stop all immigration.

Yeah, exactly, it has nothing to do with it. He's trying to change the subject. It will be sad how many people will eat this up though.

They do take his bait all too often, that's one of the reasons he's so effective at his schtick. Then again, even if he's effective at changing the news cycle for a few days, corona isn't going away.

A little concern of the ramifications of the policy at the right wing gambit:

@revrrlewis: Ainsley Earhardt is concerned about Trump's temporary immigration ban because her au pair is an immigrant: "Many families rely on child care from other countries ... hopefully the president will roll out a plan and we'll all be informed" https://twitter.com/revrrlewis/status/1252555801018982401/video/1

Wow! Talk about accusing others for things that you do. Further upthread of this or the criminal thread i posted a story of how the Saudis and Emirates were able to use a payment service to assign small amounts of money to funnel to the GOP and assign them to as if they were trump voters. Since the amounts are small enough they don’t have to say who the people are that “donated” to the PAC.

Honestly, the theme here is the GOP as it exists today, is not good at basic math.  That is why the party has no grasp on reality.

Trumpers project their faults onto others. They assume that everyone is as corrupt and immoral as they are.

DONALD TRUMP

APRIL 15, 2020

Adam Schiff: Russia Is Still Interfering With US Elections—and Trump Is Covering It Up

The Intelligence Committee chair says the president is holding back information.

The Russian government attacked the 2016 election to help Donald Trump. In the years since, various intelligence officials have publicly stated that Vladimir Putin intends to intervene again in the 2020 election. But Trump doesn’t want to hear that—and doesn’t want the public to know that. Days after intelligence officials in February told House lawmakers during a classified briefing that Russia was already interfering in this year’s election and once again preferred Trump, an irate Trump ousted acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire and replaced him with a loyalist.
