I guess this means they're giving up on their "speakeasy" addition?

It sounds like maybe the addition is just becoming the new location? I never quite got what was going on with that, and it moved like molasses.

Edit: I see what you're saying...they're moving to a new building, so the addition is effectively abandoned.

Yeah I'm really sad about this. Real Design Group are cool people though so I'm sure they'll come up with some other unique concept. I just hope they keep the Santa Claw!

Well, THAT was fast...

Unique downtown Dayton cafe-bar to close, owners plan 'new and amazing' venture

One of downtown Dayton's most unique café-bars is closing its doors.

Proto BuildBar, which opened around five years ago at 534 E. 1st St., will shut down Dec. 21, according to a post on its Facebook page. That day will mark "the end of the great experiment that is Proto BuildBar," the post stated.

...

The Facebook post did not reveal a reason for the closure, however, it did hint that something new is in the works.

“And finally, in the spirit of the many great innovators that adorn our walls, we too are ready to reinvent ourselves,” the post stated. “Stay tuned because we have something all new and amazing brewing.”

Popular Irish bar near UD sold to Dayton businessman

A popular bar near the University of Dayton has been sold.

Flanagan's Pub, a long-running Irish tavern located at 101 E. Stewart St., was purchased for $400,000 by N&S Investments LLC in Springboro. The limited liability company lists Nicholas Keyes Jr. as an incorporator/associate/partner. Keyes is vice president of Dayton-based Key-Ads Inc., a family-owned outdoor advertising company. He was also a winner of the 2019 Dayton Business Journal Forty Under 40 award.

It's unclear what Keyes plans to do with the property, but a change in ownership sometimes results in upgrades, renovations and other forms of capital investment. The Dayton Business Journal has reached out to Keyes and is awaiting a response.

The owner of popular nightclub that has been a staple in downtown Dayton for over a decade is scouting new locations.

Luke Liakos said he recently visited three locations that could house Club Masque, currently located at 34 N. Jefferson St. The club will shut down this month after Liakos said could not secure a deal to stay.

“It’s more than just paying money,” Liakos said in a Facebook video post.

..."Hopefully one of these three locations I looked at today will come through and we’ll be able to do something soon," he said,...

New vodka bar with unique Russian concept to open in downtown Dayton

redstarbar*750xx4341-2442-0-525.jpg

A new bar with a unique concept will open this week in downtown Dayton, replacing another establishment that recently closed.

Red Star, which is described as a "themed, Soviet-era Russian vodka bar," will launch Friday at 534 E. First St. The bar is owned by Chris Wire, who formerly ran Proto BuildBar in the same space. The bar/cafe/innovation center closed Dec. 21.

At the time, Wire promised a "new and amazing venture." He found it in Red Star, which is advertised as a "Proletarian Pub" that blends "the opulence of the Cold War-era Kremlin with the vibe of a straight-forward, working man's dive bar."

I got a chance to check out Tender Mercy at their soft opening last night, and wow is it an impressive space. I don't think there's any bar in Ohio quite like it. I hate saying that it's something "you'd find in a big city" but it definitely has the vibe of some exclusive lounge you'd find in Chelsea or Chicago's north side. They are currently only serving draft cocktails at the main bar, but there is an additional "mixology bar" in the back that will serve handcrafted cocktail. Dayton.com has a few pics of the interior:

It's underground like Ghost Baby in Cincinnati, but you don't need to have "the look" to secure a seat here!

I wish they would keep the main restaurant "Lily's" but the bar area a themed-Tiki type of place.  Best of both worlds but I'm glad a tiki is coming!

New brewhouse aims to be the 'happy hour hot spot' for downtown Tipp City

Downtown Tipp City will soon welcome a new bar that aims to be the "happy hour hot spot" for local residents.

Chaffee's Brewhouse is slated to open in June in the former Pink Ribbon Girls space at 15 S. Second St. Owners Lisa Richards and Chrissy Lesher say they are putting the finishing touches on renovations, which included a built-from-scratch bar.

The bar will feature craft beers, wines, cocktails and mocktails (non-alcoholic) — most of which will be sourced from local breweries and wineries, Richards said. An 18-tap draft system will accompany the bar.

Chaffee's also will provide carryout options for beer, as well as a limited food menu featuring charcuterie trays. Customers are also able to bring in their own food from other establishments.
