Wouldn't surprise me at all if the team does something Monday, although I haven't heard anything suggesting that. Tuesday is the latest we should see renderings though.

I'm not really sure what they would be laughing at.  We have great population growth and near boom levels of development coming up in 2020.  We're picking up steam.

That's why I said it goes both ways. All have their own merits and different things to boast and things that are shortcomings. Yes, there are things to scoff about all the cities including Columbus. Even as a resident of Columbus I find some of our developments and boasts laughable compared to our peers. Rather than a rabbit hole of discussion I'll leave it at the idea that each city can easily find things to laugh about the others and not be entirely wrong. But that's where the strength in realizing that the success and growth of the 3Cs and different things that each offer is something to promote and work on as a state. Not many states can boast that.

One of the many great things about living in Columbus is that our friends in Cleveland and Cincinnati are both 2 hours or less away! I just came back fr a weekend Cleveland trip and it was lovely. This is on top of being on Cincinnati less than a month ago as well. I love seeing all three cities grow and change, and I wish the same for Ohio's other great cities that DON'T begin with a C ?

Some more behind-the-scenes work for the new Crew Stadium from yesterday's City Council meeting:

 

Columbus City Council creates entity that would own new Crew stadium

 

The Columbus City Council created a public entity on Monday that would own the planned Columbus Crew soccer stadium Downtown and could issue bonds to help construct it.

 

The council voted to declare the new Confluence Community Authority organized, defining its boundaries as the 28.66 acres west of the Huntington Park baseball stadium.  The petition approved by the council to create the authority says the Crew team, acting as the project’s developer, “entered into that certain Purchase and Sale Agreement” with the land’s owner, Nationwide Realty Investors, which “has agreed to sell approximately 21.02 acres of the property.”

 

It also says the team “owns or ‘controls’ the property within the meaning of” the law creating the authority.

I hope they at least follow through with a shuttle system but its success will be largely determined on whether they create a dedicated right of way during events.

These are taken while biking along the Scioto trail. You can see the Municipal Light Building, 600 and 530 W Spring. 600, 530 and the parking lot off Hocking street will make great development sites not just because of the new stadium, but if/when the area between Spring and the river is improved like the Scioto Greenway east of the railroad.

Looks like NRI has some pretty tough demands on releasing the land if it still hasn't been inked. Hearing that the deal is 'close' for a couple months indicates that it's much more than a simple transaction of selling land in the effort to save the team and makes me believe they are looking for a long term financial benefit rather than a one time transaction. It harkens back to a brief reference in a thread of NRI holding land. NRI and Kaufman have an 'agreement to acquire' rather than 'purchase' or stating that Kaufman is buying the land as articles at the time reported for the non-NRI parcels. Could be semantics but the word choices seem pretty specific. 

 

The article also goes on to talk about the fact the city still has not transferred their land and won't until the final private land deal is signed. 

 

No one has stated the deal is in trouble but someone is definitely playing some hardball to squeeze out benefits.

I do not want any problems whatsoever in getting the stadium and the area around it developed. Anyone or anything that stands in the way should be beaten with a stick. Nationwide had better damn well play ball(no pun intended)on this. No damn delays! Too much hard work(and worked nerves of Cbus sports fans) involved for this to have problems

City council has already created the entity that will own the stadium.  That wasn’t supposed to happen until the deal was done.  The fact that it has happened means that the deal is close enough that they were comfortable going forward. Makes me feel better about it.

Well, it sounds like its going to be quite a departure from the early concepts we say back in 2018. Most common report is that Nationwide wanted the stadium and surrounding development to match the aesthetics of the Arena District, however it seems NRI may not have won that battle. Amid ever more frequent rumors of a 'bold and iconic' stadium design, during a panel discussion on sports venues we got this last night from Don Garber (MLS Commissioner)...

It seems we are getting something pretty modern/unique. Im really intrigued and excited to see these renders. Looks like 2020 is going to get even more interesting. 

Also, word is we will have our renders within the next week of so. 

 

 

 

I really want something iconic and that looks like it is from Star Wars-and in a good way-kind of like the new Vets and all-unusual and good.

Also, why the low quality renders?  I don't mean the photos of slideshows. In the renders themselves you can barely see what materials are to be used.

LOL. We constantly hear complaints about the AD being unifrom brick buildings. We finally get something different and interesting....and it's met with complaints.

 

These are pictures of pictures. Of course they aren't the best quality. Higher resolution renderings will be released soon.

Every stadium looks like a box from above, its the fan experience and street interaction that matters. 

 

Totally agree. I think it looks great. I could understand some complaints about it's bold and different design if it were in Huntington Park's place, but it's all the way at the end of the AD. The inside looks absolutely amazing and the community space they have added, such as a bar that will be open to the public and a small concert venue, are really cool.

I wasn't complaining. I like it a lot actually. I was just saying I can definitely see where NRI's hesitation comes from. Also, I specifically said not the picture quality, but the renders. The official renders do look better, but it's not the first time I've seen renders where you can barely tell what materials are going to end up looking like e.g. The Castle, and the red Oak Street building. I figured they'd have ultra-high resolution renders considering the scope of this project.

I like it. It will be a nice new centerpiece for the new district. Hopefully the office/residential buildings that will go up around it will be as interesting. SO much better than a casino or low density NRI neighborhood that was also envisioned.

The stadium will include a steep seating bowl, designed to put Black & Gold supporters close to the action and provide the best experience for supporters. Similarly, the stadium’s wrap-around roof will provide protection over each stand and amplify the noise back to the pitch, helping enhance the matchday atmosphere.

Crew SC’s new home will be divided into four unique stands, each of which will have its own identity and design that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Columbus’ urban neighborhoods. The stands will feature diverse seating and social amenities to enhance the supporters’ experience:

 

  • The stadium’s West stand will be near the player tunnel and feature player seating, player box seats, pitch side club seats, concourse club seats and a lounge, and a suite level with unique “ledge seats” cantilevered in front of suites.

  • The South stand will be near a videoboard, including a lower and upper bowl with general seating and a bar overlooking Nationwide Boulevard, and include a brew hall – a 5,000 square feet soccer pub with open views to the entrance plaza and downtown that will be open on non-matchdays to support a variety of local community events.

 

The new downtown stadium is also set to feature an open 360-degree concourse which will enhance fan experience by maintaining views to the pitch from the concourse, connecting the Nordecke Beer Garden in the north, the feature bars in the south, and the public plaza in the southeast. The concourse is designed to also support activation for non-soccer events during non-match days."

How many suites will this have? Because I just did a 15-minute walk radius:

I imagine the pedestrian bridge over the Olentangy and any connections to the Reach on Goodale will connect within a 15 minute walk the HQs of:

 

White Castle, Chipotle, Nationwide, Columbia Gas, Orange Barrel Media, Cover My Meds, and AEP.

 

I imagine this will make suites a premium.

Having lived through the nightmare that we Crew fans endured in 2017-18, I almost didn't care what kind of new stadium we would be getting.  But I did know that this Arena District West site was the perfect property for it.  So if anything decent could be built there, it would be a win for the City and the Crew.

 

And then the initial renderings came out in December 2018 - and I was excited for the stadium concept and for the surrounding development and for the redevelopment of existing Mapfre Stadium into a new practice facility/community recreation area.  Then we heard about a new approach for the stadium that MLS commish Don Garber called "like Star Wars" - and I got a little nervous.

 

Fortunately, Don Garber (aka The Soccer Don) was mostly wrong about the "Star Wars" aspect of this revised stadium design.  It does feature much more black colors and from a certain angle it might resemble Darth Vader's helmet, but it is fortunately not the Death Star landing downtown.  It looks like the team and their designers have put alot of thought into the fan/pedestrian experience getting into the stadium.  (BTW, the interior stadium looks as amazing as the previous design was - so good on them for that too.)

 

The revised renderings answer some questions I had when Business First showed these two contextual aerial renders a week ago.  The first shows a "fan plaza" between the stadium and the elevated railroad tracks along West Nationwide Boulevard:

The second closer view showed the "fan plaza" and a service dock/parking behind it:

Fortunately, this is the fan plaza and the service dock/parking behind it in today's rendering:

It looks like the team and their designers have put much thought into the fan/pedestrian experience both going into the stadium and walking along Nationwide Blvd.  It appears there will be alot of stuff happening along Nationwide - a beer hall was one thing mentioned in today's articles.  It also looks like there's plenty of room for game-day pedestrians along Nationwide and in the main entry plaza.  But it's done without losing that important street edge along Nationwide Blvd:

But I think the below rendering is my favorite from today.  This shows the fan plaza between the stadium and the elevated railroad tracks.  It is behind that main entry plaza shown in the previous rendering.  It also shows a stage for concerts on this plaza.  If you compare this location with the Business First context renders, this neatly tucks into a space where it shouldn't disrupt the proposed development west of the stadium.  In fact, by focusing the pedestrian and fan experience to Nationwide Boulevard and these two plazas, it allows the proposed development west of the stadium to be adjacent to all the action, but not be overwhelmed by it:

Plus - I just love that folded/overlapping roof form in this image.  Suitably edgy, but without looking out of context in this more industrial part of the Arena District/downtown.

 

So shoot off those fireworks!  After the purgatory of Precourt's ownership and the living hell of almost losing the team in 2017-18 --- THIS IS HEAVEN !!!
