WEST SIDE WONDERLAND

New renderings revealed for western expansion of Hudson Yards park

By SYDNEY FRANKLIN • September 28, 2018

Finally, we have a visual of what the rest of the rail yards at New York City’s Hudson Yards will become. CityRealty reported that new renderings have been revealed of the expansion of the 17-million-square-foot megaproject, detailing how the development will take over the entirety of the Amtrak railyard.

^^ Great pics posted earlier-you have a good eye for showing things off for the best. The Vessel looked pretty good-love the elevator. If rich people need a place to live and work, well it is better that it is going in over railyards and not displacing anything really. I like the idea of a skating rink in winter. Kind of reminds me of Rockefeller Center with the skating and the Xmas tree-the Vessel kind of reminds me of a high tech inverted Xmas tree as well.

What are the lighting schemes for the Vessel?

I also know that the northwestern part of the diagram is part of Javits Center-are they planning anything for that parcel they own?  Also looks like there is a lot of underutilized property north along 11th. I guess that will go/is going highrise too?

*The people in the pics you took do look sort of like "rendering people" other than that they are dressed for colder weather and maybe in a bit darker clothing. Hardly a fattie in the bunch! lol.

^ yes there are plenty of plans for the area to the north in front of the javits convention center -- stay tuned!

btw that area is also the hudson yards. many people have been understandably confusing hudson yards (the decked over rail yard) with hudson yards (the greater neighborhood), which includes the new park and all of the area you are referring to.

this neighborhood was basically the last major tabla rasa in manhattan.

its funny but i could never understand why something...anything...was never built across the street from the javits over all the years, like some mini mall or strip plaza of chain restaurants, but it never happened. of course thats for the better now that the neighborhood is such a hot development area.

i went to the opening of the shed performance hall yesterday and then back later in the afternoon for a performance. its like 9 levels inside of various venues and galleries. and it can be rolled in for outdoor performances, so that will be something to see in the summer.

Was at Hudson Yards for the first time last week. For me it still feels a little too new and shiny in a quickly-built-Chinese-second-tier-City way. I know it’s built better than that though, so am hopeful it will age well.

We both thought the Vessel was both ugly and utterly pointless.

geez i can see sterile, but quickly built? its the opposite of that. chinese construction is built on fields and hy was built on a decked over open railyard, so it couldn’t be more different. also, the quality of the materials of many of those hy buildings is top shelf.

otoh the vessel is the vessel. im indifferent. i liked the views though, did you go up in it? its still very popular, so people must like it.

i have no idea how the mall is doing, its full of mostly ridiculously expensive shops and restaurants. i wonder what will happen to that over time? same fate as any mall i would guess.

its all still a work in progress, so we will see.

on a positive note, the observation deck that opens next year should be a good one, so thats something to look forward to, as is the western railyard development and the surrounding wider hy neighborhood developments.

^ those aren't apartment buildings, they are office buildings, a hotel and a train station.

eventually when its built out the western yards will be mostly residential.

There are apartments/condos adjacent to Hudson yards.  That is what I'm referring to.  Related built a ton of residential surrounding the development.

^ i still can't tell what buildings you are referring to, you can't just say?

there are quite a few apartments within hudson yards:

- the decked over apartments around the vessel and the mall being developed by related and oxford

- more still in manhattan west, which is also a decked over part of the hudson yards and being developed by brookfield

- and then many, many more in the 'adjacent' or surrounding greater hudson yards neighborhood by a variety of developers

so its confusing, but there are so many apartments around there now and yet to come of all stripes no one can keep up with all of this.

All.  I don't like any of them.  I dead serious.

What is up with that grand piano?  It looks like the movers broke the legs and so they set it on a concrete street planter.  Plus, she appears to be reading paper music AND a score from an ipad.  Or maybe she's facetiming with her teacher right over there in New Jersey.

^ via our friend google i see that is a $795k fazioli aria piano.

seems more fitting for a $59M apartment than grandma's upright.

I can't believe that is a real thing.  And sorry, it being NYC, please show some loyalty to Steinway.

^ steinway's are classic pianos for pre-war apartments, unless you want to go all 2001 a space odyssey.

and speaking of steinway, the steinway tower aka 111 w57st should top out anytime now.

there is kind of a mega-tower race going on now in the hudson yards neighborhood between 50hy on the right and the spiral on the left.
