Thanks. Neither. It is the observation pier above Pier W restaurant which sticks out over the cliff from the 30-story Winton Place condos in Lakewood.

Really cool shots.  I think these city life-type photos are favorite now.  And your intro sentence totally resonates.  I have a very specific memory taking the rapid downtown and walking from Tower City to PHS to meet my parents one night back in the early 1990s when I was a teenager, and even then, when the retail strip was almost gone, the walk was colorful, active, and exhilarating. It helped seal my interest in Cleveland and cities.  For me, light and human activity are the only antidotes to winter bleakness, and man does Cleveland have winter bleakness that needs combating.

Thanks. I love winter -- right up until early January when all the Christmas lights come down. Then it is no longer magical and beautiful and pristine looking. It's just white and gray. Since I'm a weather geek, I appreciate a snowstorm when it shuts down a winter-hardened city like Cleveland. But other than that, it's a drag until March comes and we get the first teases of spring.

I know some cities cite homeowners for having Christmas decorations up until late January. I wish they wouldn't. Instead I'd like to see Christmas lights left up until at least Valentines Day, perhaps without Santa or the some of the obvious reminders that Christmas is over. But having the lights up well into February could combat the wintertime blahs. We need to find more and better ways to celebrate and decorate winter, rather than just hold our breath until spring.

A pleasant surprise! Walking back from lunch, we went through the Huntington Building (925 Euclid) in Cleveland. A security guard let us take these pics in the massive, closed bank lobby.

1497140_10200707132475569_1036797797_n.jpg

Repairs had to be made to the decorative 1924 ceiling, so they had so bring in craftsmen from Europe who had repaired the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.

1560707_10200707145275889_1872414091_n.jpg

BTW, the security guard said his job his pretty spooky these days because the building is only about 15 percent occupied. So when he patrols entire sections of the 1.5-million-square-foot building that are empty, he says it gets kinda scary in there.

FWIW, he also said the building's conversion to apartments is the hot rumor.

Another ostentatious Cleveland bank lobby, this one built by National City Bank in the 1890s. Before the FDIC, banks tried to convince depositors they were sound by building public areas like this. Surely a bank that could afford this structure was sound.

That National City Bank lobby is one of the best in the city.  A great space, light fixtures as well.

Ya know, if my City Target doesn't go into the first couple floors of the May Company building, this would certainly be a next-best choice!

I was recently given an in depth tour of the steel mills (won a silent auction at Cleveland Public Library last year), and I have to say, it was one of the most invigorating experiences of my life.  In a world where the hype often does not live up in reality, that tour was as amazing as you'd expect.  And imaging that the mills were once 5 times more extensive boggles the imagination of what it must have been like down there.

Cool pic.

I seem to remember hearing that Churchill (or one of GB's leaders) said that if Hitler had seen Cleveland's industrial valley in the late 1930's, Germany would've never started WWII

Or Pittsburgh, or Gary, or Youngstown. Sadly, most of that is gone.

Like the line from Bruce Springsteen's "Youngstown" song, "Well my daddy come on the Ohio Works when he come home from World War Two. Now the yard's just scrap and rubble. He said, 'Them big boys did what Hitler couldn't do'."

I'll give someone a prize if they can identify this location in Lakewood. A clue: unless you're walking (not driving) along a main road, you'd never know it was there.

The Shore restaurant owner Tina talks with a customer. The Shore was closed for four days in early May after a parapet wall above the sidewalk fell. But they're open again and serving breakfast and lunch again!

Density and mixed use not only makes for a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, it also offers interesting photographic subjects like this commercial-residential juxtaposition on Clifton at Hird in Lakewood.

Despite the Cubs banner, we're not in Chicago. We're on Fruitland (no jokes) at West 116th in Cleveland. This style of townhouse is common here, as are the brownstone apartment buildings seen in the background.

Across West 115th is this Spanish style home from the 1920s. This style was all the rage in the 20s, but usually was featured on larger houses than this urban cottage.

Some of the scenes along my walk remind me of old England and New England. Even though this structure is much newer, it is sufficiently weathered and traditionally designed to appear several hundred years old. In reality, it's maybe only 100 years old.
