KJP
Full moon over Lakewood-Cleveland "The Edge" from the night of Friday 13th. Damn lucky to get this shot! ;) At right is the one-time flophouse, the Jay Hotel in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. It is being converted into market-rate apartments. Cars and pedestrians vie for space on West 25th Street in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. There used to be plenty of space for both because there was little of either along this once moribund street. This vacant lot across Lorain Avenue from the Ohio City Rapid station will soon be a mix of apartments, townhouses and cafes/shops to be built by Abode... http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/11/developer_andrew_brickman_plan.html “What is the meaning of this city? Clueless,Ohio
At first glance, i thought your second picture was the Cinecraft Bldg on Franklin. The scaffolding recently went up on that. I was getting nervous thinking that damage from superstorm Sandy would not be addressed. This bldg is just too nice. Good thing the cornice is going back up. KJP
Clifton Boulevard through Lakewood at 5:40 a.m. Easily the coolest time of the day too. Between the Carlyle, left, and Winton Place, Lakewood. RTA bus laying over between runs. A ship inbound to Cleveland at dawn. Downtown Cleveland at dawn. A warm light offshore breeze, the scent of flowers and some peaceful music on the headphones made this sight even better. Good morning Cleveland! KJP
Enhance Clifton construction moving to the north side of Clifton Blvd in Cleveland. Very busy, noisy scene during morning rush hour! Enhance Clifton construction etc They aren't much help with spelling though... More Clifton construction! What Enhance Clifton construction is doing to parallel avenues, like Lake. Ironically traffic is moving faster on Clifton. Solid, neo-classical apartments on Lake Avenue. Yes, but can anyone spot the abandoned shoe? Old East Ohio Gas office building getting converted into apartments. One of four 20+ story buildings in downtown Cleveland that was or will soon be converted. Walnut Wednesday (gathering of food trucks) at Perk Park in Downtown Cleveland. Always great to see kids running and playing at a downtown park. KJP
Walnut Wednesday at Cleveland's Perk Park. Walnut is the street behind me. More than a dozen food trucks descend on the park every Wednesday. Today was an especially busy day though I'm not sure why. The weather was cool and cloudy, unlike last week's perfect weather.... I had the beef and pork tacos from Touch. Both were tasty but I liked the pork taco better. My sister came over from her office and tried the Touch burger which was huge and "awesome" she said. KJP
Views from my morning walk along the grand dame of west-side boulevards -- Clifton. House sandwiched between apartment buildings on Clifton in Lakewood. Entering a section of single family homes. But some have different neighbors like a modern fire station. This house has an apartment building next door. I've heard it said houses in Lakewood are like snowflakes -- no two are alike. Townhouse at Clifton and Nicholson. Emerson School. Many kids in my neighborhood walk to this school. Lakewood has no school buses. An interurban railway to Toledo + streetcars to Clifton Park were built along with Clifton in the 1890s. Two-lane Clifton was lined with vineyards then & one track each ran along future tree lawns. Tracks were ripped out in the late 1940s & street widened. So many great homes and vistas along Clifton. And really big trees! One of the benefits of being close to Lake Erie, the extended growing season and the moisture it provides. It's why the southern shore of Lake Erie is one of the largest grape-growing regions of the country. Art deco sisters on Clifton. Lots of vistas on Clifton. One of my favorites on Clifton. Love me some wrap-around porches on Clifton in Lakewood. Approaching my section of Clifton, with lots of apartments and condos. Home on Clifton. It isn't pretty on the outside, which is OK because I seldom see the outside in the 18 years I've lived here. “What is the meaning of this city? KJP
Heavy thunderstorm at midday Saturday Aug. 2 hits Lakewood. Heavy rains can bring out the scent of the trees and soil, and briefly make a densely populated area smell like the forest. Temporarily the largest patch of nature in/near The Edge of Lakewood/Cleveland. This will be the site of the Giant Eagle Market District/Starbucks and the the church deconstructed into the Brickhaus townhouses. Streetscape takes shape on Clifton from West 115-117th. This is part of the $20 million Enhance Clifton bus-rapid transit project in Lakewood and Cleveland which includes enhanced transit waiting environments, bendy buses & landscaped median in Cleveland. KJP
Meanwhile, earlier that morning (about 6:30 am), I take my morning walk. This time I go back to the lake..... Big trees. KJP
The most-fun part of a roof replacement - demolition! This is the second house on Beach Ave in Lakewood to get its roof replaced this summer. Cont'd: The green house in the middle was the first on Beach Ave to get its roof replaced this summer. Like snowflakes, no two houses in Lakewood are the same. Corner business at Franklin and Lakewood Ave. You want big trees and diverse housing styles? We got 'em in Lakewood. Faith United Presbyterian Church at the corner of Lakewood and Detroit avenues. My next-door neighbor building on Clifton. I considered moving into The Cynwyd in 1993 but didn't care for the condition of the bathrooms and kitchens. The building was built in 1924 and it wasn't very well maintained back then. The top floor caught fire a couple years ago. The building was rehabbed. BTW, I moved next door in 1996 after living in an apartment in Berea with no view and no airflow. I have lots of both where I live now -- plus nice bathrooms and nice kitchen. :) My music during this morning's walk was, among other songs, Wind Guide You by Jeremy Soule from the Skyrim game soundtrack. “What is the meaning of this city? KJP
Lakewood City Hall. Yeah, I know... Fugly. Thoreau Avenue, one of the few brick streets in Lakewood. Scattered sections of rowhouses. Thoreau Avenue, NS crossing and Winton Place. Good front porches make good MAC conference rivals. Two-faced house on Thoreau. What did I say about snowflakes and houses in Lakewood? One of the most unique things about Thoreau is this jog in the middle of it. Even the sidewalks jog on Thoreau! What street did I say I walked down this morning?
