The 240-185 vote is a victory for anti-abortion forces led by Indiana GOP Rep. Mike Pence, but unlikely to survive in the Senate.

The House has approved a Republican proposal to block federal aid for Planned Parenthood.

The 240-185 vote on Friday the 18th was a victory for anti-abortion forces led by Indiana GOP Rep. Mike Pence. He says taxpayer money should not go to groups that provide or promote abortion. Democrats say Planned Parenthood provides contraception and other valuable family planning services, and that cutting off the money will make it hard for women to get such basic help.

Planned Parenthood provides services in hundreds of clinics around the country. Pence aides say the group reported receiving $363 million in federal money in its latest report. The proposal is part of a bill that seeks to cut government spending this year. The Democratic-run Senate has stronger abortion rights views than does the House, making it unlikely the House proposal will survive.

Bloomberg Criticizes Proposed Cut to Planned Parenthood

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined other elected officials, as well as the president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, on a conference call Tuesday to condemn provisions pending in Congress that would cut hundreds of millions of dollars out of Planned Parenthood’s budget, calling them detrimental to poor women and politically motivated.

“Let me start by being clear,” Mr. Bloomberg said, “they have nothing to do with fiscal responsibility or the budget deficit.”

Those cuts, passed by the House last week as part of the budget, would eliminate a $317 million program that provides family planning to low-income women. Planned Parenthood’s share of that money is $75 million. In addition, the House passed an amendment, proposed by Representative Mike Pence, a Republican of Indiana, that would strip Planned Parenthood of all its federal financing. Taken together, Planned Parenthood says it would lose some 40 percent of its budget in the coming year. Mr. Bloomberg, Gov. Peter Shumlin of Vermont, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman of Connecticut spoke forcefully to more than 20 reporters from around the country on Tuesday, and enumerated the services that Planned Parenthood provides in their cities and states. In New York City, Mr. Bloomberg said, Planned Parenthood performs 12,000 cervical cancer screening and 56,000 contraceptive visits every year...

D..... O...... A

When are they going to start actually governing?  With a split Congress and Administration, that doesn't mean passing symbolic measures you know full well won't even make it out of Round 2.

Are they ready to fund all the orphanages that will have to be brought back into service? I'd better have a place to take all the babies that people are going to be dropping on my porch on rainy nights.
