Local distillers lauded for spirits excellence

It isn’t just Central Ohio’s most prominent distillers picking up spirits awards these days.

Two of the area’s smaller brands can clear some space on their shelves, too.

New owner of Zauber Brewing space switching to new brand next month

Here’s something new for the Central Ohio craft beer scene — an acquisition.

Scott Talmage and a group of investors bought the equipment and lease of Zauber Brewing Co. at 905 W. Fifth Ave. for an undisclosed sum and will rebrand as a new brewery possibly as soon as next month in that space near Grandview Heights.

More below:

http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2017/06/06/new-owner-of-zauber-brewing-space-switching-to-new.html

Didn't catch this.  Kind of disappointing - Zauber was one of my favorite local breweries (probably because I'm partial to Belgian beers).  Will be interested to see what happens there.

Business First had an extensive listing of craft brewers in Columbus and Central Ohio.  Not sure if non-subscribers can view this entire listing in the first link below, but here it is, along with an additional article about the making of that list:

Cross-posted from the Columbus Bars thread:

Below is a Business First article link from last year about how the latest wave of craft brewers are sparking the reuse of industrial and retail spaces.  It looks at how this trend has been good for the real estate market in general and some neighborhoods in particular.  These smaller craft brewers have been turning long-dormant industrial spaces and past-their-prime retail sites into active destinations for consumers and for other businesses that want to be nearby to this activity.

Three locations were mentioned:

  • Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton that converted the former Capital Lift & Manufacturing Co. elevator and conveyor factory into its brewery in 2014.

  • Lineage Brewing in Clintonville that converted a former car wash building along High Street into its brewpub in 2015.

  • Seventh Son Brewing in Italian Village that converted a former automotive repair shop along Fourth Street in 2013.

(I know it's nearly a year old, but I just came across it.  Plus, its just so on-the-mark for a development website like UO.)

Breweries sparking reuse of industrial, retail spaces long past prime:

Land-Grant Brewery To Create Collaborative Beers For Columbus Crew SC Fans

Land Grant Brewery out of Franklinton is teaming up to brew some special beers for Columbus Crew SC matches with other, die-hard soccer fans at breweries across the country.

( . . . )

So far, two collaborations are planned.  An American Pale Ale will be brewed for Columbus’ match against FC Dallas with Texas brewery, Peticolas Brewing.  The second co-brew will be a Hoppy Saison brewed with Kansas City’s Boulevard Brewing Company.

New Distillery Will Open in Grandview Next Year

With the recent change in laws allowing distilleries to open tasting rooms and restaurants, brace yourself for the increasing number you’ll likely see in the next few years. High Bank Distillery, coming to Grandview in 2018, is one of them.

Co-owners Jordan Helman (Zest co-owner) and Adam Hines knew they wanted to start something a little over two years ago, and back then, the concept they had in mind was a craft brewery.

Columbus Brewing can keep name, restaurant will change its moniker, brewery’s attorney says

By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: December 27, 2017 at 4:14 PM

After two years of legal bickering and 20 years of questions, there now is just one Columbus Brewing Co.  The craft brewery, owned by Beth and Eric Bean, retains the moniker, while the Columbus Brewing Co. Restaurant, owned by Doug Griggs and Mike Campbell, will be looking for a new handle.

The brewery and restaurant agreed to an out-of-court settlement last month, the details of which are not public.  The restaurant will change its name sometime in 2018 and can no longer use the shortened CBC brand, according to the brewery’s attorney. ... The two businesses have always been separate, but that was never obvious.

District Brewing, the brewery’s legal name, formed in 1988 and held the trademark for the Columbus Brewing Co. brand since 1989.  In 1997, then-owner Jeff Edwards invited Cameron Mitchell to add a restaurant onto the front of the Short Street brewery.  Edwards stipulated that the restaurant would be called Columbus Brewing Co. Restaurant.

The two have been confused ever since. ... Eric Bean bought into the brewery in 2006 and Mitchell sold the restaurant to Griggs and Campbell in 2007.  The issue of who would use the Columbus Brewing Co. name and how it would be used was never addressed until this out-of-court settlement.

-- The second expansion for Seventh Son Brewing would establish a barrel-aging space and second bar in the Brewery District-German Village area at 716 S. High Street.

Reviving Hoster Brewing: A deal with Actual Brewing makes sure the Gold Top brand continues its long history

sign-hoster-factory.jpg

The historic Hoster beer brand with its signature Gold Top brew has lived a nomadic existence since its namesake brewpub turned off the lights in 2001. The owners of the 182-year-old brand and the recipe for the Dortmunder-style lager have lived off contract-brewing deals that put kegs of the beer out to the masses sporadically over the years, while also trying to raise funds for a branded brewpub to call a home of its own. Now, for the first time since that restaurant and bar shut down, Hoster expects to have a regular flow of beer on the market.

BrewDog taking on gender inequality with rebranded beer

If women are going to be paid less for work, BrewDog says they should pay less for beer.

The craft brewer on Tuesday announced its latest mission/promotion – a “Beer for Girls” that rebrands its flagship Punk IPA as Pink IPA and replaces its blue label with a pink one. That pink pandering is part of the point.

“This is our overt parody on the failed, tone-deaf campaigns that some brands have attempted in order to attract women,” BrewDog USA CEO Tanisha Robinson said in a release.
