    DC Statehood

You answered your own question. The logic in which Washington, DC, which has fewer residents than Hamilton County, but could get two senators, is the logic laid out in our 1787 Constitution. And in case it sounds like I mean that in some kind of negative way, I don't - I mean it in a factual way.

The principle is that government doesn't suppress speech. Sometimes institutions need to step in, do their civic and moral duty and enforce norms as the newspapers and TV journalists did for much of the 20th century. This has been a long-discussed aspect of free speech. I can recall these discussions in my own education, which took place 10-15 years ago long before this became a flashpoint. I am talking about open Nazis here, who were and are succeeding in roping in and infecting many young minds. There is no principle in the history of western political thought that states that publicly-owned corporations should be giving them megaphones.

As far as how it's been interpreted by courts over our entire history, that is the legally correct view. As far as right-wing/libertarianism has always viewed the bill of rights, it's also the correct view.

So small jurisdictions shouldn't have representation because they're small? Huh?

Not to mention racial segregation and urban poverty in DC and all the federal policies which created/exacerbated those problems over the decades.

    DC Statehood

How is it easier or better? DC is an independent city with its own legal system etc, not built for being a part of another state. It's likely much harder to try to absorb them into a state government and completely remake their city charters, laws, institutions, etc, conform to the local government structure of Maryland. Much easier and better to be their own state. Not to mention the cold hard reality. If they want to be a state (which they do), and they fulfill the constitutional requirements and congressional votes, they can be state. You have zero good arguments in this case.

    DC Statehood

Yes, that's why Barack Obama was elected on a campaign of trying to overcome Us vs Them, but "them" had other ideas. So now you're going to see a lot more assertive "Us." Keep in mind, what I'm suggesting they do - add two reliably Democratic senators to a body which is heavily, heavily tilted to Republicans - is incredibly benign at worst and healthy for our political system at best.

Gerrymandering is a totally legal and ok thing to do, so is adding states for left-leaning areas of our country that aren't states. Call it a power play. Who cares? Yes, it increases representation while GOP gerrymanders decrease representation. Yes, it's perfectly legal. No, there's noting unethical or undemocratic about it, it will only serve to ever-so-slightly level the Senate's absurdly-slanted playing field. In spite of all of those legitimate justifications, I am perfectly happy to concede that it's a power play. Point is, the Democratic Party is on the upswing for the first time since 2006-2008, and this time they aren't going to be singing kumbaya like in '08 (before they accepted the unfortunate truth about the radical anti-democracy, anti-Americanism within the GOP), they're a whole lot wiser to the McConnell-style games, and they're going to be a whole lot more aggressive. The chickens are coming home to roost. I'm very sorry there's no GOP-leaning areas that aren't states already. If there were any left, certainly they would have been made states in 2017. Too bad! “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, we won't get fooled again.” - George W. Bush.
  9. I've read a few articles which try to get to the bottom of 2016 polling errors, and most of them conclude that the big issue was weighting by education. Education level was never as strongly correlated to vote as it was in '16 and the pollsters were caught off guard. They are of course trying to correct for this error as best they can now in 2020, but, they will still be learning and figuring it out. Polling had gotten down to such an exact science during the late 90s thru 2012 eras and this is a curveball for them, so some of them are warning that it still could be off. The problem will show its largest impact in state polls for states with larger swaths of HS-educated white people so it shows up in the swingy rust belt. I wouldn't count on the problem being 'fixed' (and pollsters and Nate Silver types are certainly are bending over backwards telling everyone such) but you'd think they'll at least do better than last time. I think this is the article I'm recalling: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/31/upshot/a-2016-review-why-key-state-polls-were-wrong-about-trump.html

Did you guys see that Reddit banned The Donald and YouTube kicked off Richard Spencer, David Duke, and Stefan Molyneux today? A good day for deplatforming Nazis. Living in a society which has free speech as a first principle, we need private institutions such as publishers and newspapers and now social media sites to deplatform dangerous and hateful ideologies. And it's up to activists to pressure them to do so. I am hopeful that the tech industry begrudgingly will start to get its act together and practice social responsibility, albeit a few years too late.
  11. Kind of surprising to see GA and AZ flip without NC.
  12. There isn't a big incentive for him to do it right now. This campaign at the moment seems to be in a good place for now, so might as well ride that wave for the time being then announce the VP when/if he needs a shot in the arm or if he has a bad news cycle. I think he said he'll announce by August 1 so that'll probably be when we hear. I do think Harris is the clear choice.
  13. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/trump-cant-figure-out-how-attack-biden/613402/ Great article about how Trump is having trouble defining Biden. It's sad because of the racism and sexism RE: Obama and Hillary. But also enjoyable in the short term to watch team Trump struggle.

    Racism

Something was reported and investigated. It turned out to not be what was suspected. That happens sometimes. Not really a "wrong" party in this.
  15. Lol I forgot about that one. Too much to keep track of.

Clearly she is the real victim here.
  17. Dem voters knew they weren't getting crowd sizes when they picked Biden. However, in spite of Trump's 2016 victory, crowd sizes are still not votes. If they were, Biden wouldn't have won the primary. If Moore was serious about trying to beat Trump/help Biden, he'd be posting something positive about Joe Biden instead of concern trolling. If he was serious about building enthusiasm, he'd help build enthusiasm instead of helping to dampen it. But he isn't serious, so instead we get this trash, Michael Moore might as well be a Trump supporter as far as I'm concerned. Moore and his ilk want Biden to fail for the same reason they wanted Hillary to fail - if Biden fails, Moore gets to pat himself on the back and parade around talking about how clairvoyant he is. And I didn't even mention the fact that the rally didn't turn out like this at all.
  18. Damn. I don't even like to send multi-paragraph emails without sitting down at a computer.
  19. Right wingers on twitter are now going with a "DeMoCrAtS CHoSe iLLeGaL AliEnS over 3.6 MiLLioN bLAcK cHiLdRen in PoVerTY #bLaCkLiVeSmAttER #nEvErForGET " angle. Most of the time I am numb to their BS but every now and again they do something that is so reprehensible and nakedly cynical that I'm taken aback. To try to co-opt a slogan and movement that they've been smearing for almost a decade like this, just to use it for their stupid daily gotcha dunking tweets, just truly disgusting.
  20. This hit the front page of WaPo this afternoon. The village adminstration was clear that the protestors were local and the counterprotestors unsurprisingly came from all over. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/06/16/bethel-ohio-black-lives-counterprotest/
  21. These types of words have different meanings depending on context, and the context you're using is different than the context in the above post. You're referring to the fact that the USA isn't a direct democracy, while this is talking about the strength of Democratic institutions, free press, etc.
  22. They are going with "transition to greatness" now which is lame lame lame.
  23. Had to laugh because I inadvertently timed the market successfully this week. Did a 401k rollover last week, the money is in transit now, I guess I sold high. I am all index funds and against trying to time the market.
  24. If he started to have bigger crowds outside the rallies than inside, oh would it get under his skin, it'd be glorious.
