  1. “Healthy Community Center” Planned for Former Library Building The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center announced a plan to turn the former Martin Luther King Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library into a “Healthy Community Center.” Plans call for the 9,000-square-foot building, located at 1600 E. Long Street, to be renovated to accommodate a demonstration kitchen, meeting rooms, and a café dedicated to serving healthy foods. The overall focus of the space will be on programming aimed at decreasing obesity and educating the community about chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. ... The announcement comes less than a month after the dedication of a new MLK branch, located just down the street at 1467 E. Long Street. Saturday night the Jackets traveled to Carolina and got an impressive 4-1 win. Instead of balanced scoring, this time the Jackets did it with a hat-trick from Atkinson and three assists from Panarin (back in the lineup after missing Thursday's game). Also back was Bob, who had 30 saves. This marks the fourth straight game where Bob has allowed only one goal - a complete turnaround from his rocky start to this season. The win extends the Jackets point streak to seven games - and now they've won 5 of their last 6 games. Going into tomorrow's match at Toronto, Columbus is first in the Metro Division with a 12-6-2 record: https://www.jacketscannon.com/2018/11/17/18100711/game-20-recap-cam-atkinson-hat-trick-lifts-columbus-blue-jackets-over-carolina-hurricanes-4-1

Thursday night the CBJ had an impressive 7-3 victory over Florida at Nationwide Arena. This despite Bob, Panarin and Nash being out of the lineup due to an illness going around the team. Korpi got 40 saves and seven different players scored the seven goals. Plus, 14 of the 18 skaters got at least one point. How's that for balanced scoring? The win extends the Jackets point streak to six games - and they've won 4 of their last 5 games: https://www.jacketscannon.com/2018/11/15/18097693/minus-key-regulars-jackets-overcome-early-deficit-rout-panthers
  4. Thursday night, the Basketball Buckeyes got another quality road victory with a 69-60 win at Creighton. This time grad transfer Woods and freshman Washington led the team in scoring with 19 and 12. This win is an even more impressive road victory than the season opening win at Cincinnati. Creighton is ranked #38 by KenPom, while UC is ranked #44 (OSU is currently #30). Today, the Basketball Buckeyes improved to 4-0 with a home win over SC State.
  5. Yes. I posted a Business First article about the OSU trustees approving design work for a 1870-space parking garage at the medical campus in the OSU Medical Center thread. In the article they said it was part of prep work for another hospital tower of over 800 beds. And then someone else commented whether this new tower would be larger then the recently completed 20-story James Center. Don't know what happened to those posts, but I reposted the Business First article over in OSU Medical Center thread at https://forum.urbanohio.com/index.php?/topic/9257-columbus-osu-medical-center-expansion/&page=3&tab=comments#comment-864243 EDIT: Apparently this is why -- https://forum.urbanohio.com/index.php?/topic/13011-server-upgrade-coming-soon/&tab=comments#comment-863795
  6. REPOST: Ohio State plans to build one garage for new hospital tower, then tear two others down Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center plans to build a new parking garage on the land opened up by relocating Cannon Drive as the first in several steps before building an 840-bed hospital tower. After the new garage opens, the North and South Cannon garages will come down to make a footprint for the tower to connect to the James Cancer Hospital. The end result is more parking: 1,870 spaces in the new garage to a combined 1,100 in the old ones. 7. GAME #11: OHIO STATE 52 - MARYLAND 51 (OT) http://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401012878 WHEW!!! The Buckeyes survive a wild game in College Park in which they made almost every kind of miscue a football team can make. Here's a brief rundown of the miscues: - Give up two loooong TD runs early in the game - Give up an on-side kick recovery - Give up a fake punt play for a first down - Give up a Pick-6 - Give up two fumble turnovers - Commit a pass interference penalty when they stopped the other team on fourth down late in the game that eventually turned into a TD But despite all of that, the Buckeye tied it up 45-45 with a minute left in regulation. OSU scored a TD in OT. Maryland also scored a TD, but decided to go for 2 and couldn't convert. A thrilling game - but not one for fans of defense. 103 overall points and 1223 overall yards (688 for OSU - 535 for Maryland). Dobbins had 37 carries for 203 yards (Weber didn't play due to an undisclosed injury). Maryland native Dwayne Haskins went 28 of 38 for 405 yards and 3 passing TDs plus 15 carries for 59 yards and 3 rushing TDs!

  9. When we talk about the many projects that Children's Hospital had undertaken over the past decade, we are usually talking about construction projects on the hospital's original campus at the northeast corner of Parsons & Livingston or their campus expansion west along Livingston Avenue. This article at CityLab looks at another type of development that Children's Hospital has been undertaking in the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital. As the CityLab article states it: "About a decade ago, Nationwide Children’s Hospital embarked on a project to transform the adjacent area. The medical institution pumped investments into housing improvements in the surrounding community as part of an audacious effort to create a healthier environment for residents." https://www.citylab.com/equity/2018/09/when-a-hospital-plays-housing-developer/569800/

At only 18 games into the 82-game 2018-19 season, a little over 75 percent of the season remains. Typically, not many teams have either pulled away from the pack or played themselves out of playoff contention this early in the season. Most teams still have hopes of a successful season, and this season is no different. But it is interesting that we haven't seen any teams open up super-strong or fall down super-bad in these opening games. Much like the CBJ, most teams have had good and bad stretches in the first quarter of this season. The Jackets have had a mini-run of late - winning 3 of their last 4 - and riding a five-game point streak (3-0-2) after last night's win at Dallas. That has vaulted Columbus into first-place in the Metro Division with a 10-6-2 record: http://www.espn.com/nhl/standings
  11. The Basketball Buckeyes looked even better in their home opener against Purdue Fort Wayne, winning 107-61. CJ Jackson again led all scorers with 25 points. But a trio of freshmen filled out the scoring after that with big forward Jaedon LeDee (who didn't play in the Cincy game) getting 16 points, guard Duane Washington Jr. getting 20 points, and guard Luther Muhammad getting 12 points.
  12. https://www.dispatch.com/news/20181112/first-half-of-high-street-remake-in-short-north-nears-end-more-disruption-ahead The first half of the massive $32.7 million High Street streetscape project in the Short North is finishing up. Most of the work south of 2nd Avenue has been completed, with only a “punch list” of items to be worked on through the winter, according to the above linked article. Work will begin next year on the final two phases of construction between 2nd and 9th avenues. The article says this work will continue into 2020, and also that early in this part of the project, the city will need to tie into a large sewer line under the intersection of High and 5th, which will cause traffic problems.

MLS PLAYOFFS: EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINAL - LEG 2: https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2018-11-11-new-york-red-bulls-vs-columbus-crew-sc/recap https://www.massivereport.com/2018/11/11/18086098/columbuscrew-scs-season-ends-in-shutout-fashion-to-new-york-red-bull-mls-cup-playoffs-2018 The Crew had an advantage going into this second leg of this playoff series - up one goal in the aggregrate and held NYRB scoreless in their road game. Because of this, if the Crew could manage a road goal at Red Bull Arena, they would force NYRB to score three goals for them to advance. So the gameplan for both teams was to score. The Red Bulls were better at this strategy to start the game. They put pressure of the Crew and eventually scored in the 17th minute off a well-executed free-kick that also got a fortunate bounce for NYRB. After that equalizing goal, the Crew settled down for the rest of the first half. For much of the beginning of the second half, it looked like the Crew might get that one road goal they needed. But instead it was the Red Bulls that got a pair of decisive goals during a three minute stretch later in the second half. NYRB midfielder Daniel Royer scored two goals at the 73rd and 76th minutes to clinch their playoff advancement. Credit the Red Bulls - they were the best team in the regular season - and this win helps erase some of their past playoff failures against the Crew. Now they face the second-best team in MLS (Atlanta) for the Eastern Conference championship. Credit #SaveTheCrew - without their tireless effort, this could have been the final Crew game ever, instead of just the final game of 2018.
  14. ^ Hey, you know all those school closing recommendations that a task force worked six months on? Well, forget about them. The school board just over-ruled them, again. So no schools will be closed: Columbus school board again votes against closing any schools After a citizens’ task force worked six months on a plan to close under-enrolled schools, the Columbus Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday evening to ignore the group’s recommendations to close Linden-McKinley High School and shutter four other buildings. It marks the second time in just over two years that the board has simply ignored key recommendations from a task force that it appointed to study how to better use its aging buildings. Under intense pressure from parents, students, teachers and neighborhood backers, the board instead offered up a surprise resolution accepting some minimal boundary changes to a few schools, closing some administrative sites, and studying such things as selling a North Side bus compound and finding a better facility for its academic flagship Columbus Alternative High School. 15. GAME #10: OHIO STATE 26 - MICHIGAN STATE 6 http://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore?gameId=401012886 This was some vintage cold weather Big Ten football in East Lansing. The OSU MVP was probably the punter. He had six punts that pinned MSU inside their 10-yard line, and two punts that pinned the Spartans at their 1! One of those MSU drives that started at their 1 netted zero yards and led MSU Coach Dantonio to snap the ball out of the end zone rather than punt it! That safety gave OSU a 9-6 lead in the third quarter and it was all OSU after that. The Buckeye defense came up strong against a weak MSU offense. And though Haskins had another good game, it was the running game that salted the win away in the fourth quarter. Weber had 104 yards with 1 TD - and Tate Martell reappeared to give the running attack another option.
